If a student studies abroad in England, is he automatically covered under England’s health care policy?

Possibly, but I think they should have coverage - what about vacations and summers? And what if they are seriously ill and need to come back home?

I suspect one needs to be a UK citizen to be covered by their national health insurance.

No. If you’re there for an official course at a university then you should be covered under the National Health Service (NHS).

Go figure, we have millions of uninsured in this country and the UK gives free healthcare coverage to non-citizens who just happen to be there on a temporary basis.

Although, ideally yes you should still have some sort of coverage for when your in the US (vacations, before and after).

Wow. Amazing.

Assuming you have medical insurance coverage on your S, check with your insurance to check his coverage abroad. It should cover him.

Okay, here’s some info from the NHS website. It looks like visitors have to pay -

It’s basically free if you stay for longer than six months. Otherwise, sorry mates.

NHS sitpulates that these services are free regardless however:

“treatment for accidents and emergencies as an outpatient in a hospital’s accident and emergency department. Emergency treatment in a walk-in centre is also free of charge (England and Wales only). However, if you are referred to an outpatient clinic or admitted to hospital from an accident and emergency department, you will be charged
compulsory psychiatric treatment
treatment for certain communicable diseases, such as tuberculosis, cholera, food poisoning, malaria and meningitis. Testing for the HIV virus and counselling following a test are both free of charge, but any necessary subsequent treatment and medicines may have to be paid for
family planning services.”

Sometimes you get what you pay for. Just don’t get sick in England with one of the conditions like macular degeneration where the ironically named NICE (National Insitute for Clinical Excellence) will ration your care. From page 126-127 of ‘[The Undercover Economist](<a href=“The Undercover Economist: Exposing Why the Rich Are Rich, the Poor Are Poor ... - Tim Harford - Google Books”>The Undercover Economist: Exposing Why the Rich Are Rich, the Poor Are Poor ... - Tim Harford - Google Books)’ by Oxford-trained economist Tim Harford:

Stichintime:

Actually, my German friend has macular degeneration (she’s slowly but surely losing her eyesight) and she has routinely come to England for treatment. Sometimes NHS can’t do everything–it tries to help as many as possible with the resources it has. That’s why you go private if needs be, which still turns out to be cheaper than the U.S. I have a lot of gripes being an English immigrant, but healthcare certainly is not one of them.

Crappy healthcare is still better than no healthcare…

Then the trick is to make sure you don’t have any “needs be” from the “free” healthcare system.

Hopefully, a private psychologist would offer treatment for [cognitive dissonance](Cognitive dissonance - Wikipedia).

Thanks for the link–I took psych though. One would think, even as the young naive student I am, that the conversation in the parents forum would be elevated to a certain civil and even intellectual degree (you know, since they are parents and all). Yet there are still cc’ers who have to resort to ad hominem when they can’t express themselves clearly.

“The third cause of ■■■■■■■■ is incompetence. If you disagree with something, it’s easier to say “you suck” than to figure out and explain exactly what you disagree with. You’re also safe that way from refutation. In this respect ■■■■■■■■ is a lot like graffiti. Graffiti happens at the intersection of ambition and incompetence: people want to make their mark on the world, but have no other way to do it than literally making a mark on the world.”

My mother passed out while vacationing in Britain and ambulance took her to hospital, where she was admitted for a battery of tests and they kept her for several days. She was feed three delicious meals each day. Upon her release, they did not charge her a penny.

In the spirit of sharing and in homage to The Bard (and maybe the first psychologist) of NHS-England, here’s a link offered in return:

Thanks. He does have health insurance; I just have to check to see if it covers him abroad or if I need to buy supplemental insurance.
