Do these ECs show dedication?

Not in the order of importance.

[]Motivational Speaker to Teenagers about Body Image
[]Fundraiser for Anorexia Awareness
[]Internship at an OCD center
[]TeenLine
[]Piano [attempting to win an award]
[li]Founder of my school magazine[/li][]Yearbook editor-in-Chief
[li]Art [attempting to win an award][/li][li]Helping 2nd graders write stories[/li][/ul]

Some of these ECs are goals that I haven’t achieved yet (motivational speaker, internship, and founding the magazine… they’re all a work in progress though). I’m trying to make sure I don’t have a laundry list but I also show dedication in my application.

I’m very passionate about each and every one of these things, though I have no idea what an adcom might think about my list. I plan to write my essay on overcoming my struggles with body image and my dedication to help other teenagers overcome theirs.

What do you think?

Your list has 9 bullets. If you list all of those on your college apps, I think adcoms will have a hard time believing you could dedicate yourself and give 100% of your effort to that many things. However, with the first four I sort of see a pattern about body image. So maybe you should focus on one or two of those first four. It still shows your passion to help teens overcome their body image problems without looking like you’ve spread yourself to thin. As for the rest, let’s be real. You want to become a motivational speaker, get an internship AND start a magazine. WOW! Let me tell you, senior year (assuming you are a rising senior) is fun but stressful with college apps and the college search and everything. Those are three significant goals to achieve. I would say focus on one of them. Keep in mind you are already editor in chief of the yearbook, which I bet is a huge task, and already shows your passion for journalism, writing, etc, so maybe instead of potentially neglecting your role as editor in chief with trying to start a magazine too, you should just focus on the yearbook. That’s my two cents. I don’t know you and I certainly can’t tell you what to do, but keep in mind that senior year can be stressful and you still want to make time to have fun. The last thing you want is to take on too much and be VERY VERY stressed out or potentially have your grades drop because you have so much to do.

Thanks for your input. :)

Well if it helps a bit, I’m actually a rising Sophmore [planning out my ECs]. I’m founding the magazine next year but I won’t have any major positions past that (thus my use of the word “founding”). It’s a lot more manageable when I spread it out.

But yeah, it’d be crazy if I was just cramming it in senior year. :P

Bump. :D

I would emphasize the first three/four, and the magazine/yearbook - editor in chief shows a great amount of dedication, and the first few show a general passion about educating the oublic on eating disorders. I disagree slightly with teh above poster because I think that if you mention all of them, you’ll be absoltuely fine, as long as you highlight certain ECs.

I think these are great ECs. They show a lot of variety, but they also show dedication to both body image/mental health and writing/artistic pursuits in general. If you can juggle all of this without sacrificing academics, go for it! I would agree that you should forget about the magazine, though. Do it if you have time, but it is a bit redundant and you should focus on the yearbook, your other more interesting ECs, and, of course, academics. :)

Alright thanks guys!

For the record, I do plan on doing everything on my list since I’m very passionate about each and every one of them (I have a lot of passions XD). I was just asking so I would know where to direct good amounts of my effort.

Again, thank you so much guys!
