Are college reunions a thing, or do they just do those for high school? Also, if they are a thing, have you gone to any of yours, and if you did, what did you think of it?
They have a bunch of alumni events in cities across the world, homecoming is pretty big, and reunions are generally a thing though it varies by college.
We did one for my sorority this fall. Forty years, and we had about 40 grads, plus husbands and friends.
My father has done one with his college friends for years. They are all in their 80’s and have been doing them since they were about 25.
Most colleges do have reunions. They want to keep alumni connected to the school – one pragmatic reason for this is that they want alums to donate.
I went to my 30th College Reunion. They have a homecoming every year and it is always some classes reunion. I made sure that my college roommate was attending. We did tours of campus to see what changed, various activities that were scheduled, watched the football game, etc.
Yes, homecoming = alumni come home. My school has special alumni group events that weekend, sometimes for the week leading up. Our college friend group has made a point to attend and they have a ball. DH and I had children late so while our friends tend to be empty nesters and young grandparents, we have to stay home and make sure our children get to school and eat. Three more years and we will join the party.
Reunions are very well-attended at Williams College. There was a lot of hoopla around my class’s 25th reunion last year. I have not attended any, because they are not my type of thing.
My husband and I went to his 5-year reunion at Vassar’s early in our marriage, but we have not attended any since then.
I think that maintaining class bonds and alumni’s connection to the college is a way that colleges get their alumni to remain loyal enough to make repeated donations. So reunions are a huge thing!
Attended my 5th, 20th and 25th at my alma mater. When one of your best friends is in charge of running it, you’re obligated to go - lol. My 20th and 25th were a blast - our class is very active, very big on donations, very big on school spirit and we have a big legacy mindset (though my kid is attending elsewhere and for that I’m now a pariah - haha).
We usually have one of the largest contingencies at our reunions, and we were really close in college. My best friends are from my college years, so I’d much rather go to reunions at my college than at my high school. We usually plan things that were very specific to the class - themes for parties/cocktail hours that only we would remember or know and it makes it really personal and easy to reminisce.
I had to laugh at my 20th because we actually stayed on campus in newly renovated apartments and these kids who were there for their 5th remarked at how “cool” our class was. They couldn’t believe all of the amazing things our class had planned and this one kid asked, “How did you guys plan all of this?” My response? “We’re older than you, we’re smarter than you, and we have more disposable income than you do” haha.
