Do they include the cost of SHIP (SMU's health insurance) into the "general fees"?

The “general fees” for SMU for each semester is somewhere between $2-3k, and their health insurance (which is mandatory if you do not have your own) is about $2k per year. Is this cost already factored into the general fees cost that SMU has posted for predicted costs of SMU? Also, what kinds of things are in the fees, and are all of them mandatory?

Edit: Also, if I do not have any health insurance currently, is it cheaper to get my own plan comparable to SHIP and then waive out of SHIP, or to just sign up for SHIP? I just looked it up and SHIP is $759 per semester.

At least through this semester, you either provide proof of your own insurance (insurer name, plan/group/policy #, and name of policy holder). Cost vs SHIP? That depends on what you pay for your own insurance. Health insurance is not covered by the general fees. Are you currently covered under someone else’s policy? If so, you may continue with that as long as you supply the information to SMU (there is a form to complete and you can fill it in through ACCESS). My daughter is already registered for the Fall (junior) and I haven’t heard of any changes to the health insurance requirements, so the above info probably still applies.

No, I am not covered by any health insurance at all, currently. So basically if I want to avoid getting SHIP, all I have to do is to get any health insurance, no matter how trivial the insurance is (for example, I would only buy dental insurance, because that is actually useful)? I rarely have to see the doctor or get substantial injuries, so I don’t think SHIP is worthwhile for me. SHIP doesn’t even cover minor dental stuff such as cavities and cleanings.

Actually, the link you provided in your opening post leads to a page that states the level of insurance required:

“A domestic student may waive out of the policy by documenting current, comparable U.S. insurance coverage”.

I assume “comparable” means a level of coverage similar to that offered with SHIP (outlined in the link you provided).
