<p>It depends on the situation. But mostly, yes, they do have to take the GMAT if the situation requires it.</p>
<p>If you are referring to MBA schools,yes. But a few schools are giving the option of either GMAT or GRE. I think the requirements are the same for US citizens and internationals.</p>
<p>I think you are thinking of the writing portion? I think some schools might use that to make sure that foreigners aren’t completely incapable of writing in English(and otherwise ignore that score for everyone else). But generally people on this forum seem to discount the written part of the GMAT. I have no personal insight though.</p>
<p>Yes, the written portion only matters if a student receives a poor score. Schools will use it to determine whether foreign applicants had someone else write their essays.</p>
<p>Some internationals are required to provide TOEFL scores if their undergraduate instruction language is not English. A good TOEFL will mitigate a poor AWA GMAT score.</p>

<p>Unfortunately, US citizens are judged more harshly; the combined score is looked at.</p>

<p>There are three parts: Quant, Verbal, and AWA (written). The AWA is not part of the combined score and is generally not a big deal for native speakers.</p>
