Sweet Love, by Anita Baker
I got married a bit after Princess Di. One of my housemates played in a early music quartet and they were kind enough to play at our wedding. I know at least one song was Purcell, though not I think the trumpet voluntary.
20 years ago my husband and I went to some sappy movie and there was something in the movie about “their song”. When we got back to the car I got a little sad and said “we don’t even have a song”. At which Boy George’s “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me” came on the radio. My husband looked at me and said “This can be our song!” That took me out of my melancholy about not having a song real quick. To this day we laugh whenever we hear that song.
My husband would probably also answer AC/DC’s “You Shook Me All Night Long” if he was here :-).
I considered Time in a Bottle to be our song. Wanted it to be our first dance but the band I hired didn’t see their way to learn it for us. Dh is about as sentimental and romantic as my cat, so he would never be able to answer this question in a trivia quiz. LOL.
No problem @eyemamom, I like both versions.
I actually listened to a couple of the songs here. Fun to listen to some oldies but goodies.
In college, my first roommate solemnly told me that Elton John’s “Someone Saved My LIve Tonight” was her and her boyfriend’s song. And I remember thinking: have you LISTENED to the lyrics??? (about a guy being saved by a friend from a bad relationship.)
Hahaha! Ex and I did. H and I don’t. And by ex I mean BF of seven years, not ex-h.
The latter’s H is one smart dude for knowing how to pick his battles. ![]()
Everytime I hear that song, it brings back memories early undergrad as that song was played all the time in several dorms at the time.
We don’t have a particular song, but I’m pretty sure I still have a mix tape he made me in 1976 or 77. However, I don’t have anything to play it on any more.
Even though we didn’t have a ‘dance’ at our wedding…H and I are NOT dancers unless alcohol is involved… Our song is Groovy Kind of Love sung by Phil Collins.
Lots of good songs here that bring back other memories…
Just Give Me a Reason by Pink.
Wait, this is not about break up song.
My sister and her husband’s song is Stand by Me. I love that song, especially by John Lennon.
About a guy being saved by a friend from a relationship with a woman because he was gay…I love the song but they had obviously never paid attention.
My wife and I have 2 songs. They were played at our wedding. The Girl From Ipanema and Lush Life.
My daughter and I have a song. My daughter used to sing a certain song all the time in our house growing up. So, when she said she was getting married, she came up to me and said, “We are dancing to Somewhere Over the Rainbow at the wedding”.
I smiled and said, “Yeah”. And we did dance.
I suppose that we do have a song, however, it’s not a celebration or anything that I’d wish on anyone. During Desert Storm, they kept playing Oleta Adam’s, “Get here (if you can)”. My husband was deployed to Saudi Arabia, and I was constantly flying back and forth to the Middle East for several months…leaving our baby with a babysitter. Not knowing if I was ever going to see my husband again, because at that time we weren’t all desensitized to constant wars, and we had been told what a massive enemy we were facing, which ended up being untrue.
I still can’t listen to that song without crying, but fortunately it doesn’t play very often any more.
H isn’t into music and I was in grad school and working when we planned our wedding so wasn’t listening to much music at the time. I remember asking a classmate/workmate for suggestions. He told me of a song, I listened to it, and thought it was fine so that was our first dance song. I have no idea what it was. I really do wish we had a song, though.
Editing to add that now I will be awake all night trying to remember that darn song!
We had a glorious anniversary celebration in France and the lovely homeowners had left a musical CD by Jim Brickman, all piano music. We just hear any of those songs and we are right there, recalling the best trip we ever took!
“About a guy being saved by a friend from a relationship with a woman because he was gay…I love the song but they had obviously never paid attention.”
It’s not even just that - it’s about Elton’s (thankfully unsuccessful) suicide attempt where he turned on the gas in his apartment and Bernie Taupin (his lyricist) found him. You’re right they didn’t pay attention! There’s a story in one of the books about Elton’s life where the producer is urging him on to sing the vocal with even more meaning and Bernie Taupin leans over and says to the guy - you realize he’s singing about killing himself? - and the producer wisely shut up.
What’s that other song - Green Day - I hope you had the time of your life - that people always think is good for a “good times” photo collage, and in reality the guy is sneering it sarcastically? Or Born in the USA, which really isn’t a celebration of the US?
Ours is Somebody by Depeche Mode.
This morning, I asked H what “our song” is–he said “I Never Promised You a Rose Garden.”
We always tell people our song is “What’s Love Got to Do with It?” by Tina Turner. (This was the overplayed song when we met)
For our wedding dance (we’re not dancers, but did the obligatory first dance), I wanted Elvis’ “Love Me Tender.”
But H said that his dad really hated Elvis (they are from Memphis), so he didn’t want to use that song. I asked the DJ what the popular songs were. He suggested “Truly” by Lionel Richie, so we went with that. It is a nice song, but way too long for a couple of non-dancers. I wish I would’ve used Elvis.
H is a really good singer. When we got our first answering machine–probably around '89/'90, H called the house when we were both at work, so I would get his first message when I got home. It was him singing “Love Me Tender.” (He still sings that, and lots of other songs, to me.)
“This Must Be The Place” The Talking Heads
Lyrics
Home is where I want to be
Pick me up and turn me around
I feel numb, burn with a weak heart
Guess I must be having fun
The less we say about it the better
Make it up as we go along
Feet on the ground, head in the sky
It’s okay, I know nothing’s wrong, nothing
I got plenty of time
You got light in your eyes
And you’re standing here beside me
I love the passing of time
Never for money, always for love
Cover up and say goodnight, say goodnight
Home, is where I want to be
But I guess I’m already there
I come home, she lifted up her wings
I guess that this must be the place
I can’t tell one from the other
I find you, or you find me?
There was a time before we were born
If someone asks, this is where I’ll be, where I’ll be
We drift in and out
Sing into my mouth
Out of all those kinds of people
You got a face with a view
I’m just an animal looking for a home
And share the same space for a minute or two
And you love me till my heart stops
Love me till I’m dead
Eyes that light up
Eyes look through you
Cover up the blank spots
Hit me on the head
But our band at the wedding (Roy Milton and his Solid Senders) only knew our other favorite “Moon Glow” So that’s what they played
