Do you beieve in love at first sight?

Well, maybe not first sight, but first date! My 28 year old son is head over heels in love with a girl. I have never seen him like this and he is on cloud nine! He was out of town with a friend and they ran into this girl that happened to be a friend of my son’s friend from school. They chatted and I think kept in touch through FB for a couple of week. Said girl was coming to the city my son had just moved to for work, so they planned lunch. Lunch turned into an entire day touring the city. The next weekend the girl had a wedding to attend and asked my son if he wanted to join her as she didn’t have a plus 1. Son figured why not, and spent the weekend with her.

It is my understanding that he was going as a friend; my son has many female close friends, so this is not out of the ordinary for him. It is funny, both of my kids closest friends are members of the opposite sex; while they have plenty of friends of both sexes, I think they both have one special friend that they feel the closest to.

My son calls us after the trip to tell us that the two of them realized they are crazy about each other, and while they live 1,800 miles apart, they want to see if they can make this work. My son hasn’t been involved with a girl in 6-7 years as he just hasn’t found anyone that he wanted to be in a relationship with. Yes, he has many female friends and I am sure one or two would have been delighted to be a couple, but he hasn’t had that feeling for any of them. With this girl, he can not stop talking about her; he told us about her the minute he got home from the trip and told her grandmother the next day. If he could shout it from the rooftop, I think he would!!

I am excited for him as he is so happy, but in the back of my mind I worry, what if it doesn’t work out? He actually told my cousin that he knows they will get married; not right away, but it will happen. The biggest issue with the distance between them is my son just started his residency, so as a first year intern, his time is not his own. It will be very hard for him to fly to visit her except for his vacation weeks, although she seems to have more flexibility and is coming to see him in a couple of weeks. For the time being, they are talking on the phone, texting, and will soon Facetime as my son is getting a hand me down iPad from his sister.

I wonder if at their age they feel more of a rush to move things along quickly. My husband and I started dating at 17 and married at 23, so I don’t know what a relationship at an older age is like, or one without actual dating; not that 28 is old. :)

Tell me your happy love at first sight stories!

My husband told me that he knew he would marry me right after he first met me! A year later…:-D. Twenty Nine years later we are still going strong!

I don’t believe in love at first sight but this isn’t that. It seems to be more than first sight. Your son seems to be in a good place - other friends and someone that might work out. It will have to stand the test of time, distance and other demands on his time.

You do know a lot more at 28 including what you like and what you don’t like and you’re much better off in understanding and dealing with others. He’s going to miss some things being in infatuation mode but he will eventually figure them out if they bug him enough.

Do they have a plan or date in mind to get married or are they just going to do the long-distance dating thing for a while?

My current boyfriend told all of his friends that he was going to marry me the first time we hung out. This was freshmen year and he had no idea that I had a fiance at the time.

A year and a half later we started going out and it was clear to everyone that it was right, including us. We started discussing marriage after only a few months and it didn’t feel weird at all. Started living together less than five months later. Not married yet, but there’s no rush.

Love at first sight? No. But I do think sometimes you can just know after even a first date. It just clicks, everything clicks.

YES! I fell in love with a photo of my DH and we’re still in love 19 years later.

I have been in four significant relationships and in each case I knew immediately, even from a distance, that the person was going to be very significant to me.

In one case, I knew upon hearing the name of my first husband. There was such power I had to excuse myself, go to the ladies room and barf.

I think it’s a spiritual connection that our psychic selves intuit. I am not wise enough to know if it’s past lives, pre-knowledge of the future, or some other mysterious mechanism we know thing of.

And lest it be called “lust at first sight” in one case the guy was way across a quad and I couldn’t see his face, his build, just about anything. He was little more than a blob with long hair and a bandana, which I thought looked ridiculous. Then I recognized the woman he was with and wondered what she was doing with “my man.” Then I thought I was crazy.

This must sound off the wall to very scientific types, but I have scientific proclivities, an not a new-ager, and have been a PhD tenured faculty member for 27 years.

In the spirit of science, I am reporting my experience and have no adequate explanation for it.

And I don’t believe in soul mates.

saintfan: See me post. We x-posted. I knew we were sympactico.

Yes.
I met my H when I was 18. We didn’t marry until I was 23, but the same initial intensity is still there 36 years later. :)

Congrats to your son.

My wife knew she was going to marry me when she saw my name on an employee list. She did not know me.

A friend of mine was standing in line waiting to go to a concert and there was this young
Woman standing in line in front of him. He liked the way her backside looked and knew he was going to marry her. He then, by coincidence, they weren’t together, saw her at a
party that night. They have been inseparable since. 40 years.

My parents got engaged after knowing each other only a month, and were married two months later! They just celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary and are still going strong.

My H and I met at a birthday party for a mutual friend when we were sophomores in college. I was in a longterm, long-distance relationship at the time but it was a rocky one. When I met my future husband that night, I think we both felt that connection that is sometimes unexplainable. We’ve been together ever since that night. Married two years and a bit after meeting and recently celebrated our 38th anniversary. The day after the party, I called long-distance b/f and broke it off, then called my mom to tell her. She shouted hallelujah! because she hated that boy. It’s been a long and very happy marriage.

snowball, happy for your son. It’s nice to see your children happy in their relationships. I hope they can make it work.

“I met my H when I was 18. We didn’t marry until I was 23, but the same initial intensity is still there 36 years later.”

Very nice.

My parents had their first date on Christmas and got married a little over 7 months later. They will celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary later this summer. They don’t say they knew immediately, but both say they saw each other and thought, “Wow, they’re way out of my league.” They still seem very much in love to us kids.

I’ve never been in a relationship…or ever been kissed…LOL. So no experience of my own to add.

“When the earth moves, why stop it?” That’s what I told others who thought we had lost our minds to get engaged a month after meeting each other. Also we lived 1,000 miles apart. This was before internet, when Ma Bell collected for every minute of a long-distance phonecall. And today’s our 30th wedding anniversary!

Age helps, because your son and friend likely have some understanding of what they seek in a partner, at least hypothetically. But that’s all just logic. The actual meeting of two human souls is something so mysterious and miraculous, I think we’d all just best back off and let them determine how the fairy dust settles around their shoulders.

I was very impressed with my wife right from first sight, but it wasn’t until many months later when I took her insect collecting for my Entomology class that she began to reciprocate. I guess there is just something about a man with more than 15 taxonomic Orders and 80 Families of insects in his collection that impresses a young woman.

Coureur, :).

P3t, happy anniversary :).

Crap that reminds me that my parents’ anniversary is sometime this week…

Yes, I believe in love at first sight.

It sounds like the OP’s son has hit the jack pot. You should feel this way when you are around the one you might spent the rest of your life with. You should be head over heels, you should be twisted, there should be no room in your head for normal thoughts, feelings or emotions, it should feel so good that it hurts.

Congrats.

Yes, there are potential problems since they live so far apart and it sounds like he is busy with work but if they work at it they can make it work.

I believe in love, in general. I believe in love at first sight. I believe in soul mates. That last part, soul mates, is much harder to find than love. I think one can “love” more than one person in a lifetime, God, I hope so, but there is probably only one or two true “soul mates” on earth for each of us. I’m happy with who I found, thank God, but I don’t think we are soul mates. She has been the most significant person in my life, by far, but I think out there somewhere there might have been someone else for each of us we just didn’t find that person first.

This thread has some interesting back stories in it. I liked reading them. Keep sharing. Ironically, I am listening to Matchbox 20’s song “3 am” which reminds me that you can find love, the later it gets at night, the lower one’s standards tend to get, a lot easier than a true soul mate but I digress.

I don’t believe in soul mates. So you’re telling me that out of the 7 BILLION people in the world, there is only one or two other people in the world that are your perfect fit? Well that just seems impossible IMO.

A little backstory: In the photo that I say of DH he was cradling a fish. Not holding it. He is a catch a release fly fisherman (from a paper mill town!) and he was barely touching it with his fingertips and mostly in the water crouched down kind of suspending the fish so as not to stress it before letting go. He was in his old school cotton camo, complete with hat and was just so tender with that fish. I can’t quite describe all that it was, but everything that I thought I knew about him as a person from that picture turned out to be true.
