Do you charge your kids rent to live in their house after they graduate college?

I occasionally have an interaction with a coworker based in a subsidiary in Korea. He once told me that almost all sons and daughters live with the parents till they are married. Also, before the son can get married, it is quite a financial burden for parents (also for their sons) to cough up enough money so that their son could get married and NOT live in the same house with his parents. This is because of their peculiar rental system: in order to rent an apartment, the renter has to pay, say, 60% of the value of the apartment to the landlord. At the end of the lease, the renter got all the money back. The landlord mostly benefits from the appreciation of the property and much less so from the interests s/he earns by depositing the money in the bank. In a country with very limited land especially in the urban area, it is quite profitable for the landlord to do so. (Kind of “screw-the-poor” housing system.)

It’s very common for parents to charge rent after college. Sometimes it is a nominal amount covering food and extra utilities, sometimes more. When parents have stable finances, sometimes they opt to bank it away for child to use later (ie enforced saviings plan).
