I was listening to some info about side hustles today on my lunchtime walk podcast - in fact, there is a podcast called Side Hustle but I wasn’t listening to that one…
Basically a “side hustle” is a side hobbly/job that earns you extra $$$ outside of your regular employment. I suppose if you are a stay at home adult a side hustle could also be something that you do outside of your stay at home tasks - and just earns you a little $$$.
I like the idea of a side hustle. eBay selling is I suppose a common one…my H does this now that he is retired and I suppose I sort of side hustle this too as I will list some of my own things. But I’m sure there must be a talent I have for something more creative…
Without giving too many specifics (like your webpage or Etsy shop!) care to share your side hustle or side hustle idea you’re tempted to try???
I think the whole concept is interesting…and perhaps more do-able now that the kids are mostly out of the house and on their own.
I listened to something similar a few months back on NPR. I find it interesting that they basically gave a name to something a lot of people have always done but called a 2nd job or source of income.Back when my kids were young friends sold Tupperware, Discovery toys, pampered chef and similar types of products. Or sold jewelry or pottery at craft fairs. I have another friend who does sewing and alterations.
I don’t have a side hustle but a couple of my kids do. My S has brought to market a couple of products he sells on Amazon. He also does package design and graphic design on the side from his regular job. He doesn’t do it for the money but for the pleasure it brings him. He loves the art side of product design. He also likes statistics and the analysis of sales and such is fun for him.
My D has in the past has had side jobs exercising horses, rehabilitation of horses, giving horses medication for people at her barn who weren’t able to get out daily.
Her bf has a side job of selling a certain type of sport equipment on eBay. He also shoes several horses. He is a trained farrier but has never done it as a career.
I met a guy this weekend who is an innkeeper as his side hustle. He owns a small business with a handful of employees, but he also runs a friend’s b&b, which is just down the road from his own home, in his spare time. It is flexible, as he can hire someone to come in and fix breakfast if he needs to be away, and the b&b is fairly small, so he doesn’t have to be on the premises all the time. Seemed like a sweet deal to me. There is an article in Kiplinger’s right now about how to make sure your retirement money extends far enough into retirement, and one of the strategies they suggest is to work part-time. They profiled a guy who does taxes for H&R Block. My kids’ Chinese tutor does the same thing–H&R Block + Chinese lessons. She has a nice niche clientele of Chinese speakers. Anyway, not my side hustles, but they seem to be popping up a lot in my line of sight here lately.
My H and I have a “side hustle” company with another couple. My H and our partner helped develop a product that they sell to a certain industry. I do the accounting for the company. We like to say that this is our vacation funding since we have taken payouts to take some very nice trips. My H and his partner are now developing something new for an entirely different industry and we are hopeful this new product will provide even more income in addition to our regular jobs.
I consider mine part-time “gigs.” I feel like hustle is when you’re trying to slyly get money for doing something whereas gig is just a smallish part-time job or task.
Mine is being a consumer consultant in medical research studies. I love it and would do it for free. I’m also a patient advocate and sometimes get some reimbursed travel expenses to national events.
Our S sells various items on Amazon. He used to make double his salary with his part-time gig but now has scaled back and makes much less.
Yes it’s way too hard to sell given the amount of energy you expend getting your product. I use Amazon for fulfillment and they keep jacking up their fees it’s really hard to make a decent profit. I used to make a nice tidy sum.
"I feel like hustle is when you’re trying to slyly get money for doing something "
Side Hustle is a very recognized term that is not ^^^ this. You can call it gig but the podcast, book, webpage etc. call it as stated. It is intended to be something in addition (on the side) of your usual “major” responsibilities.
Some years I do a lot of tutoring-- as you might guess from my avatar, I teach math.
I’ve also made a bit over the years doing freelance writing. I’ve published a few articles. And, during the years I was a SAHM, I did lots of freelance for a couple of education websites.
"Side Hustle is a very recognized term " - Maybe so. But today is the first time I’ve ever heard it. So clearly it is not universally recognized. (Of course I make no claim of worldliness.)
