Do You Have ACollege Sticker On Your Car?

I was told you shouldn’t put the stickers on the car until the kids graduate. Might bring bad luck.

Anyway, I wouldn’t put stickers on our cars. Around here, people put those stickers on their cars just to show more one-uppance (sp?). I’ve had enough of that attitude when my kids were accepted into college. Where did he get in? Where is he going? It’s a constant guessing game around here and really obnoxious.

I have my kid’s sticker, but never considered it as anything but a show of support for the school. I never think other parents are bragging when I see them. I also have two political bumper stickers for local candidates.

yD quickly plastered her college stickers on her car’s windows. She was never concerned about graduates of the rival schools vandalizing her vehicle - Smith and MHC ladies are just not into that kind of stuff. For some unknown reason, DH refuses to drive that car   The One Who Should Never Be Mentioned on the Internets has her Huskies stickers all over her Corolla, but she works in the Dawghouse, so her car is safe.

Around here, the one-up-manship would be a non-issue. Nobody has heard of D2’s school unless they are 1) from another part of the country or 2) part of a small small group like CC that knows good colleges. It makes it kind of fun.

We have 3 stickers up on 2 cars. I’m just proud of it all ; their effort and our hard work to finance it.

Recently I was in a pet store and saw a decal that mentioned the name of our dog breed (he’s half that, a mongrel rescue).

I want to add the dog decal to my car windshield. H says that’s silly.

I’m afraid my son’s school might be embarrassed if I put one of its stickers on my ancient beat-up minivan.

I have both D1 and D2 stickers on my rear window. D1’s says College1 - Mom. D2’s says College 2 - Sport.

I’m proud of both of them.

But that’s the thing… both my kids went to OOS private schools (one more recognizable than the other) with generous scholarships, so we did NOT pay full tuition. And I never assume that anyone with a college sticker on their car has or is paying full tuition at said school.

All this being said, today as I was about to get on the tollway, I saw a minivan with a Syracuse sticker on it (OK… it said 'Cuse). This is D1’s alum, and we live in the Chicago area, so this is a rare occurence (I’ve maybe seen this one or two other times in six years). However, we have been closely following the Syracuse’s BB team rise to the top this year and after being ranked #1 in the polls this week for the first time in 20 years, I was SO excited to see that sticker. I so desperately wanted to pull over with this person and celebrate this feat with someone else who obviously has ties to Syracuse and could appreciate the excitement. I’ve also been wearing my Syracuse basketball t-shirt to the gym this week (have washed it three times this week)… and not to prove how much we spent on the school, but because we’re so excited for the team.

We, too, have the issue of different schools making different kinds of stickers. Our Syracuse sticker is the kind that is placed on the inside of the window, making it difficult to see through the tinted glass. D2’s school only has the kind that you place on the outside, so hers is more visible. But the Syracuse one is larger, so I guess it all evens out. They can work it out with their therapists one day in the future!

I should add before anyone posts how many Syracuse alums there are in the Chicago area, I became very aware of this last month when we went to the DePaul/Syracuse basketball game here in Chicago. Literally, for every DePaul fan there, there were three Syracuse fans there. The sea of orange reminded me of shots I’ve seen in the Carrier Dome… but we were in Chicago. And yes, there were a lot of Syracuse stickers on the cars in the parking lot that day! Just not up in the suburbs where we live.

Me neither!

I think it’s fun to see other cars driving down I-95 with xxxxxxx College stickers when we are driving down to drop S1 off there. We have sometimes seen people S1 knows in those cars and we get to wave at them. So yes, we have the sticker on our car (it’s my alma mater and D’s alma mater, too).

I don’t either, but my comment back in post #4 had to with what others think, not what I think. D1 went to Harvard. For some people you can’t even answer “Harvard” in response to a simple, direct question without some touchy people gettting offended and thinking you are a stuck-up snot who is bragging about it.

So having my car constantly proclaiming Harvard was just not a good idea. You just never know when one of these people is going walk by your car in a parking lot and see your sticker and decide to key your car just to teach you some sort of lesson.

You betcha! We have a very, VERY old car that is rusty and needs a huge amount of body work. The Ivy league sticker is smack dab in the middle of the back window. We think it speaks volumes! :)

I often see old beat up cars with NYU, Harvard, Bucknell…stickers on their back window, and I think to myself, “Ahh, I know where all of your money went.”

Around here you would be a lot more likely to have your car keyed if you had a rival SEC school sticker on it! No one cares about Harvard!

Mega ROFL!!

Another negative thing that sometimes happens with Harvard logo stuff is that people not only assume that you are bragging but that you are also pretending - that you are merely a tourist or wannabe who bought the T-shirt or decal at the bookstore but have no real affiliation with the school.

My kids don’t even have their stickers on their cars :)

Son did wear his Big Ten specific hat into Longhorn Territory. At his school that might get you into a fight; but down in Austin everyone was nice and eager to talk college football with him. Maybe because its a different conference and those Longorns are sure big ten isn’t a threat :)

We generally don’t wear kids college clothes either. Maybe a hat.

re Harvard: son refused to apply for some of the above reasons…

I have two so far - Colgate and Brooklyn College. Still waiting on S to get me a Stevens sticker…

Since I have to drive an old Civic I kinda like to let the world know why ;)

Truthfully I am just a very proud mom.

I have them on my car and they make me smile as they remind me of my wonderful daughters and all their hard work. They have also brought me conversation with other parents of similar students. One of the schools is very small and we are delighted when we run into others that attend there. The other daughter made a connection in town that turned into a carpool connection on vacation, just from the parents seeing our sticker.
