Do you have any questions? I'm an Elon mom!

HI, old post I know! Wondering if anyone can share thoughts on the Fellows program, in terms of what it adds to their experience if they get in, how many kids wind up doing it, etc? Thanks!

My D is a Business Fellow. It was one of the reasons she chose Elon. There is the perk of scholarship money, she has a great cohort of peers and enjoyed serving as a TA to freshman business fellows. She is currently on a fellows trip to Dubai that is almost all paid for by Elon, which is great. Her cohort is strong academically but I think in other years some of the students had trouble keeping their GPA up and could not continue in the program. Her group seems to have future internships lined up and will travel as a cohort to NYC to meet with companies. I’m not sure how many students are in her cohort, maybe 30? The current freshman cohort is larger.

She applied for both Leadership and Business Fellows and was only offered Business. A very positive experience.

My D did not apply for honors or fellows because she didn’t want to go to Elon. Then she visited and liked it. Now she regrets not applying. She said it sounds like a good experience and it provides a community, which she feels she is missing.

My D initially did not want to attend Elon because she did not think it was prestigious enough. Interestingly, her friend who was most concerned about the prestige of colleges was unhappy at her chosen college and transferred after freshman year.

Thank you for the info, that’s amazing about the trips, I know different fellows groups go different places too. I wonder how many students they bring down for that interview weekend that don’t get in, and if that changes their mind about attending.

@MBR2022 In that kind of situation I tell my kids to pretend they applied for it and just didn’t get accepted, as it’s so competitive and wouldn’t have been right for them. Maybe that only helps me! ;o). Did she choose an LLC? That provides community too, I would think?

At the fellows weekend, students and parents meet current fellows and faculty. We were very impressed and thought it would have been a good choice even without fellows, but getting fellows was the icing on the cake.

My son is a fellows. The fellows interview weekend made him decide Elon was the place for him. He met most of the professors in the program as well as other students and loved it. After the weekend he said he was going no matter what. When he received the invite to fellows he also said this is the icing on the cake! Worth applying and interviewing even if you are not chosen.

She did not find an LLC she wanted. Honestly, she is struggling to find her people at Elon.

My son is applying to Fellows but didn’t receive an invite by email to apply like some of his friends did. Does that mean he is at a major disadvantage in the pool of applicants? I wasn’t sure how to interpret this. He did receive some merit money with his acceptance.

Thanks for the help!

I don’t think so. Good luck!

If she is interested in business, my D met many nice students through AKPsi, the co-ed business fraternity. You don’t need to be a business major. I think it’s too late for this semester but she could look into it for next year. Other places I know she has socialized: Elon Outdoors, yoga club and the Catholic group’s lasagna dinners.

Thanks! She is a finance and accounting double major (at least right now), so the business fraternity is a good idea.

My daughter is an Elon College Fellows. She’s a Freshman and she loves it. She’s gotten to know her cohort a lot better over J Term as they all (Maybe 60?) have a class together and got to travel to Washington DC together for 5 days. So far it has been a great experience. She is really thriving at Elon.

Thanks! As silly as it is, when she saw the “Meet the Brothers” poster in the fall, she thought it was only for guys. Now she knows.

Not silly. It is confusing that my daughter is a brother.

My son was accepted to the Elon Global Start program—he would spend his first semester Freshman year in Dublin, Ireland and then return to Elon in the Spring. It’s a fairly new program so I haven’t heard feedback from the students who have done it. I was wondering if any of you with students at Elon know anyone that’s done the program?

I don’t but know kids who did a similar program at Northeastern and one at Delaware. They enjoyed it and formed close friendships.

NC State has a similar program where the kids study in Prague. It is not required there - my son was accepted to that but opted to do “summer start” where he lived on campus at NC State and took two classes, then started in the spring. He has a friend who did the Prague thing. This is a good way to get kids who are deferred to the spring engaged and interested and kept up with their credits. My son was in college during Covid so he kept up by taking summer classes when he couldn’t work. Ireland sounds fun for sure.
