I would like to be a political science major at Columbia, but at my high school, I participated in all of the musicals and theater productions, and I would like to continue with that. Are auditions for shows put on by Columbia’s theatre department exclusively for theatre majors or would I be able to try out as well?

Short answer: No

You can pursue any major you please, and still participate in theatre productions.

I’d go even further and say that the majority of people who participate in theatre productions are not theatre majors.

There are a few productions that are put on by the department; I believe those are only staffed by theatre majors. But the majority of theatre stuff at Columbia is produced by student groups—the Varsity Show, XMAS, the King’s Crown Shakespeare Troupe, the Columbia Musical Theatre Society, Latenite Theatre, the Black Theatre Ensemble, and others—and all of those are open to anyone who wants to audition.

Ok thank you so much!
