Do you have to choose all your colleges before asking for recs?

Do I have to choose all of my colleges on CommonApp before asking for recs?

I haven't decided on the whole list yet, but I want to ask now because I know it's best to ask as early as possible. Also, since I'm doing Questbridge, I have to ask for recs for Questbridge this week, so I figure I might ask well as for CommonApp recs at the same time (I'm apply to non-binding QB schools only or IIRC this is allowed, correct me if I'm wrong).

No - you can invite your teachers and assign them to additional colleges at any time. Each teacher submits on Teacher Evaluation (TE) for you, and that TE is sent to any college to which you assign that teacher.

Hope that helps…

So if you have two schools on the common app, you can use different teachers for each of the schools? In other words, all your common app schools don’t have to receive the recs from the same teachers?

That’s correct. You get to pick and choose your recommenders for each school. Be sure to look at what sort of recommendations are requested and make your best choices based on what they are looking for. Some schools require one recommendation, others require two. Many insist on core subject teachers, most suggest a teacher who has taught you in the past year or two, and some are more general in their requests.

Thanks for clearing that up :)

How does it work if one of my teachers is going to be writing a separate recommendation for one school that I’m applying to (ED)? Can I just reassign them once they write a new letter?

Each teacher using the online school forms system can only submit one Teacher Evaluation for each student. That same TE is sent to any college to which you assign that teacher. You’ll know your school uses the online system if you have to invite your teachers and counselor on the School Forms page of the application.

If you school is submitting school forms via Naviance Succeed, teachers have the option to submit custom letters of recommendation for each college. You’ll know if you school uses Succeed if it says so on the School Forms page.

Hope that helps.

That helps a lot. Our school uses Naviance so I should be fine. Thanks for the answer :)
