One time I was invited to two parties, one directly across the road from my house and the other directly to the east of my home on the same day! I went to one and didn’t really want to go to that one. Longaberger, Beanie Babies, Precious Moments and all those snow villages…too much clutter for me but they sure were popular in the day!
I have a few I still use. All purchased at house parties in NJ.
Hmmmm.maybe I will hang on to them. If the company goes belly up at some point these might be nice keepsakes.
I didn’t know what they were either. Probably because I spent much of the 80s in Germany.
I go my double pie basket in the late 80s. I remember telling my husband I’d never paid that much to be social. I think I paid over 40 bucks for that basket, at a party hosted by my neighbor.
I bought these baskets to use…not as collectors items. If I didn’t plan to use it…I didn’t buy it…well…except, for, the vase one. Don’t ask!
But the others were all purchased to be used…and they are used. So why would I get rid of them?
Wow, one of my horrible young married memories…was invited by a neighbor to a “basket party”. I had no idea but asked if I could bring wine or a dessert or whatever. No, just come and enjoy. Then I discovered that the hostess was selling hugely overpriced things that I didn’t want. And everyone else was buying them. And I was the only one not spending a weeks grocery budget on an ugly basket. Shudder.
I bought mine at home parties in DC area.
Thumper, I agree with you that I bought them to be used. Having a basket and having it be empty (unless it’s waiting for you to bake fresh muffins to put in it…) doesn’t make sense to me. But I think some people don’t want them because their decorating type has changed or because they didn’t really buy them for a “purpose” in the first place besides to appease the friend who hosted the party!!!
I love their Easter Baskets. My kiddos each have the Easter basket from their birth year.
I use my bread basket and my cracker basket. I used my napkin basket to collect coins, husband took it to the bank to cash in the coins and left the basket. Of course, it was not there when we returned a few hours later
I have one basket in my lingerie drawer, but am not sure what brand the basket is. I am not a fan of over-priced merchandise for helping out home pyramid schemes. I have never attended a “basket party” and have shunned most parties where they will pitch merchandise to anyone. I am really trying to stop accumulating “stuff,” as we already have all we need and a bit more.
Never owned a named basket, but I have a few generic ones scattered around the house! I keep a bunch of fresh apples and other fruits in a large basket on the kitchen island. It makes the fruit easily accessible… Makes healthy snacking easier! I have a basket in the shape of a duck - everyone can drop their unneeded change (or take a few quarters for the parking meters, for example) in there… Baskets are utilitarian objects no matter what some co makes us think.
I was never a fan of baskets so don’t have any. Especially over priced baskets. But years ago someone gave me a Longaberger ceramic pie plate and it is the best thing ever. I use it all the time and still looks like new so I have started to buy some of the same design in canisters, plates, cups and serving dishes. Absolutely great stuff. I buy them on ebay for not much money.
@3bm103 totally agree about longaberger ceramic items. They are terrific…really terrific. I would love a set of their dishes.
I have one basket that I bought at the only party I ever went to. I bought it for my paper napkins and I have used it for about 30 years. I guess on a cost per day basis, it wasn’t too expensive. I think I also have one or two that were my mom’s, but I am not sure where they are right now. I will have to look at their ceramic stuff. I love pie plates.
I moved exactly one Longaberger basket and one Beanie Baby out of my house last week. Pared down to their best essence.
I use a Christmas basket for Christmas cards.
I have one in a cabinet holding potatoes and onions.
I have several others still around here and there, with this and that in them. I can’t believe how many of them I bought! They truly are great baskets though and will last forever. This is one of those things that might elicit an “awwww” somewhere down the line if you kept one or two. Baskets probably will come back into style again. I know while we’re in a period of certain popular decorating schemes, it’s hard to imagine reverting, but it might. We live in a home that accommodates having baskets very well (rustic), so maybe that’s why I honestly don’t notice them nor do I find them embarrassing. LOL, maybe I should.
I once got reprimanded by a Longaberger representative because I kept pinecones in one of their baskets without using the liner. Umpteen years later, the basket, sans liner, still has pinecones…
I too have never heard of them, and don’t think I’ve ever noticed one in anyone’s home. Live outside Boston.
I don’t remember the baskets being a “thing.” The home parties were the thing - whether it was Longaberger or Tastefully Yours or whatever.
