do you know anyone who got baseball s'ship to UVA?

Does anyone know anyone who got a baseball s’ship to UVA? My son wants to go there (is a freshman) on such, and wondered about those who did.

If your kid is a good player, baseball may help get him onto UVA. Baseball is not such a good way to pay for UVA (or any other school).

Roster is 35 kids; only 27 can get any athletic scholarship dollars. Max scholarships permitted by the NCAA is 11.7 to be divided among the 27. If your kid takes a partial athletic scholarship I believe you have to forego any need-based financial aid (but not academic merit aid, although there’s not much of that at UVA). So not a huge amount of money available. Typically kids start off at low (or no) scholarship amounts and get increased (or decreased) in later years depending on how good they turn out to be.

You’d get a much bigger cost break by sending your kid to (i) your in-state university or (ii) a school where his grades/test scores would get him a merit scholarship or (iii) to a school where his need-based aid would exceed the baseball scholarship dollars.

Do you have any links that I can read about the foregoing need based if he gets sports s’ship? He is on a team where 3-5 kids are signed to UVA, and luckily he is a pitcher and pitchers get more $ than other positions. UVA is in-state for us. He is carrying a gpa 3.73, so not sure that will help with merit at UVA. But I just hadn’t heard about foregoing other aid for athletic. Thanks for the info.

As NW said merit is very rare at UVa, and for the most part consists of an exceptionally competitive scholarship awarded not by UVa, but by the Jefferson Foundation associated with the alumni foundation. Roughly 30 students are awarded this scholarship. If you are instate for Va a 3.73, unless that is at the very top of your class, is not going to be competitive for this.

You may want to head to the Athletic Recruits Forum for more help and information. There are people there who are exceptionally knowledgeable in all aspects of admissions and athletic recruitment. I’m sure they will be more then happy to help you. Best of luck to your son.

Talk to the HS and college coaches, since they really know the rules.

But my understanding is that if a kid gets an athletic scholarship, then they usually have to forego any need based aid, because any need-based aid that goes to a scholly player is counted against the NCAA limits on scholarship dollars. Merit-based aid based on academics (which isn’t likely to be anything at UVA) does not count against the limits.

So what you’d need to do is estimate the amount of need-based aid (if any) your kid might get at UVA and then compare it to what kind of scholly dollars (if any) the UVA coach might offer. Then pick the best deal. If the coach offers your kid a scholly, I think in baseball it has to be at least 25%.

Most state schools give the coach a money budget to work with. The NCAA allows 11.7 baseball scholarships but does not distinguish between scholarships at the in-state vs. the OOS rate (which obviously cost the coach and the athletic department more to provide). I have no idea if the UVA coach has the budget for 11.7 OOS schollies ($600k per year) or 11.7 IS schollies ($300k) or something in between. The coach basically spreads the money around the roster each year to get the most bang for his bucks.

Note that athletic schollies are typically only for one year, and can be increased/decreased at the coach’s discretion. Depending on how your kid works out, that 25% in year 1 could become 50% or 0% in future years.

By far the most significant thing baseball could do for your kid is get him past the admissions office so he can go to UVA at the in-state tuition rate.
