If your kid is a good player, baseball may help get him onto UVA. Baseball is not such a good way to pay for UVA (or any other school).

Roster is 35 kids; only 27 can get any athletic scholarship dollars. Max scholarships permitted by the NCAA is 11.7 to be divided among the 27. If your kid takes a partial athletic scholarship I believe you have to forego any need-based financial aid (but not academic merit aid, although there’s not much of that at UVA). So not a huge amount of money available. Typically kids start off at low (or no) scholarship amounts and get increased (or decreased) in later years depending on how good they turn out to be.

You’d get a much bigger cost break by sending your kid to (i) your in-state university or (ii) a school where his grades/test scores would get him a merit scholarship or (iii) to a school where his need-based aid would exceed the baseball scholarship dollars.
