Do you know the way to San Jose?

Um- well I was going to fly so I assume the pilot will know the way
But
D#2 ( ihave resisted naming her as #2, because of negative connotations with Avis, but I know it is confusing which D I am talking about), who has entering an IRONMAN competition as a life goal, wants us to enter a 1/2 marathon in October in San Jose.

I figure I can go that far, and October is far enough away that I can “train” for it, unlike the local ones that are at the end of next month.

There are also, very few things that she “wants” to do with me, and I want to take advantage.

As she keeps reminding us- this next school year she will be a senior and her last as a child
( although I also want to ask her- you think your sister is a grown-up?- sometimes I think she is 10)

What experiences have you had ( and I want from kids perspective too) taking trips with your almost adult kids?

I am thinking more just me & her, rather than D#1 and Dad as well.

i’m a young adult (20s) and its nice to go away with my parents! not only do they pay for it (huge plus!!), its nice to do more relaxing things than the things i would do if i were with my friends

well I don’t know if a marathon is going to be relaxing- but I guess you are right.
Physical stuff has the advantage of focusing your energy which is relaxing- because you give yourself permission to forget about everything else.

not only do they pay for it (huge plus!!)

Thanks for reminding me- I bet she will work a shopping trip into this somehow ;)

(Well, somewhat off the topic (but related to the title!): I live near and work in San Jose, so if you come here for a half-marathon, you’d better ping me so we can at least feed you full of carbs the night before! )

On-topic, I can say that some of my most favorite times with my kids has been when we’re alone together on trips. They’re now 20 and almost-18, and recent one-kid-one-parent excursions have been rewarding, enlightening, and comfortable. And they’ve made some great memories.

Happy training!!

A few summers ago, the summer before my senior year, my mom and I watched The Horse Whisperer and left that weekend on a 2 1/2 week road trip to visit the relatives in South Dakota/Montana.

My mom and I didn’t get along very well when I lived at home for the most part, but the road trip was an amazing experience, just the two of us, and we had a great time. I highly recommend taking this trip just with her. Even if it’s just a short weekend, you will still have the prep and planning time to work together, and I think it’s a fantastic way for mothers and daughters to bond.
