I read in a couple books (Koch’s “Quest for Consciousness”), (Ratey’s “A User’s Guide to the Brain” pg. 121) that emotions are a sort of device that assist in decision making. For example - people who have lost their amygdala (known as the emotional center of the brain) have Kluver-Bucy Syndrome - where people react to all stimuli without discrimination or learning.

The amygdala’s emotionally tagging (combined with one’s memories) allows us to judge and react to the world. Limbic tagging may happen through the amygdala.

Anyhow, that’s how emotions affect one’s actions. Personally, I have to say that my emotions do influence my behavior a lot (I’m quite expressive and emotional). But on the other hand - I don’t let my emotions influence my belief systems. (this explains why I tend to score as an almost perfect thinker on the MBTI).

I make most of my decisions based on my “feelings” about the choices and different elements of the decision… I sometimes try to analyze situations, but my intuitive response to that situation is always what leads me to act.

Logic, for the most part, influences my decisions. I’m not a very emotional person, though, and have been called stoic by some, which I do agree with.
