So we need a new mattress and I thought, where can I go to get reliable information and the first place I thought–the CC Parent Cafe…so…

Our mattress is in desperate need of replacement (20 years old!!). My DH has nighttime period limb movement and we need to find a mattress that will mitigate the incredible jiggling of the bed at night. The movements begin anytime after midnight and continue until about 4 am…needless to say there is no sleep for me! This has been going on for over a year–medication has been ineffective for him.

Anyway, we tried out a memory foam mattress today–by Stearns and Foster. It has a nice pad on top and I felt as if I was being cradled.

I have heard that after several weeks of sleeping on one of these you might develop back pain. I live in the desert and I have been warned that they are hot, also. Heaven knows I don’t need to get any hotter than I already feel in my own personal summer, if you know what I mean!!

The Question is: Who sleeps on a memory foam mattress and how do you like it?

Any other suggestions for good mattresses?? Thanks a million!

Ours mattress went 30 years. I started to have shoulder pains and thought it was the hardness of the mattress. Bought at nice $400 mattress and the pain was there. Again I thought it was the mattress so we got a 2" memory foam topper. Pain didn’t go away. I was popping 6 aspirins/tylenols per night and too many to count during the day. Culprit was the cholesterol-triglyceride pills.

Anyhoway-The MF Topper is nice. Try a topper first before you spend a lot of money on a full mattress. Be sure the limb movement is not a sideaffect of other drugs.

We’ve had a Tempur-pedic for 3 years. It wasn’t my idea. . .H really wanted one. I LOVE it. H is also a restless sleeper and it is great–very quiet. I have heard some people complain that memory foam is “hot”–I don’t notice because I’m always cold (so far). No back or joint pain since I got it. My only complaint is that it is so hard to get out of bed in the morning because the mattress is so comfortable.

We just bought a Simmons mattress with latex (like memory foam but supposedly better according to the salesman…could have been just a sales pitch because it did cost more, lol). The latex felt somewhat firmer to us than the memory foam (also called Visco). We tried out the Sterns and Foster too (made by Sealy) but thought it more squishy. The Simmons was definitely better as far as not feeling the other person move. I had been having lower back pain from my old mattress and it is gone since I got my new Simmons latex.
We’ve only had it a few weeks but I love it so far. At first we were alarmed because it was really hot. Then we took off the gortex backed mattress pad that we bought with it which was apparantly holding in lots of heat. Now we have no problem with getting too warm. Guess we’ll throw the mattress pad back on in the winter, lol.

I also asked for words of wisdom on CC about mattresses. Do a search for “calling all mattress pros” in Parent’s Cafe. I got lots of great responses and advice. I’d link it for you but don’t really know how(duh):)

I am a big fan of memory foam mattresses. I’ve bought three for my B&B in the last few years and the guests generally love them. (I had people over the weekend who wanted to know exactly what they’d slept on so they could buy one when they got home.) I do think they can be a little warm in the summer months and have been wondering if something like a shearling mattress cover would allow for a little air circulation and maybe help that.

Yes.
So much so, in fact, that we now preferentially stay in hotels with memory foam mattresses (the Benson hotel in Portland, OR, for example).

Latex is not the same as memory foam, although it’s a close second initially. Our previous mattress was latex and it developed a big mound in the middle after four years… Memory foam mattress hasn’t done that in four years… still completely flat.

My husband and I tried out some of those “sleep number” beds in the showroom the other day. They seemed really comfortable, but it was a brief trial. Our Seally posturpedic is 20 years old and still very comfortable.

Love it! We’ve had ours for 3 yrs (got the super thick one) and have never slept so well. I used to lie awake for 20 minutes or so before falling asleep: now my head hits the pillow (also by Tempur-pedic) and I’m out. No more back ‘pinch’ for me and my dh doesn’t even snore as much! The heat issue does sometimes arise, but more for peri-menopausal reasons than the mattress! Add a fan to your room and you’ll have no trouble.

We bought a relatively inexpensive mattress (Ikea) and then covered it with a foam (Costco). We replaced the foam once (after two years) and I think it’s about time to replace it again. For a queen mattress, the foam is approximately $100-$150. Makes the bed like new for two years at a time. Is this the best way? I don’t know. But it seems to work. The mattress stays in place.

Speech529, what medication did your partner try? I suffer from severe RLS (restless legs syndrome) and PLMD (periodic limb movement disorder), so much so that my GP initially thought that it was Parkinson’s Disease. He referred me to a neurologist who started me on Mirapex (pramipexole). This stuff has been like a miracle drug for me – completely controls the symptoms, with no side effects. If your partner hasn’t tried this, I would urge you have him consult with a neurologist. Better for him, and maybe you’ll get some sleep!

We’ve got a Tempur-pedic (it’s been about 4 years) and I can say it’s the best money I ever spent. It’s a great mattress. I’m trying to get my D a Tempur-pedic mattress pad for X-long twin (the company just started making them). There’s a huge wait. The person I spoke to on the phone said the phone has been ringing off the hook with parents of college students who to buy these.

Hate mine. Bought a king-sized one from classic sleep products. I don’t move much while I sleep and I have a well on my side of the bed - I guess the mattress has too much memory. There is a huge “mountain” that exists now in the middle of the mattress. I only found it comfortable for the first 2 months.

H and I bought one two years ago from Bergad (I think their web site is now called Isoform) – a company in PA that sells via internet only. Their prices were quite reasonable, and they had no problem shipping to the Great Northwest.

We love the mattress. It always bounces back into shape as soon as we get up, and it looks as good as it did the day we bought it.

H is also a pretty mobile sleeper, but I’ve been able to sleep through all his acrobatics ever since we got it. We also heard that it might feel too hot, but haven’t noticed a problem there.

We love ours as well. It was the best money we ever spent on a mattress. We’ve had ours for four years…no sags, just as solid as the day it was delivered. Another “plus” is that it is not 20 inches thick so our old linens, quilts, sheets, fit the bed. We have a Tempurpedic. Some friends who got the generic one had to replace the platform after one year…they bought a tempurpedic platform and have had no problems since.

I have a tempur-pedic memory foam mattress. I’m a lousy sleeper but I like it much better than any inner-spring mattress or waterbed I’ve tried. There’s very little transmission of movement to the other side so they’re great from a ‘jiggling-factor’ perspective.

We too have a Tempurpedic mattress…I wanted it, so it was my b-day present about 4 yrs ago. We laughed as it arrived at the end of November, having been in a cold warehouse…my H thought we had bought a slab of cement. Not a happy guy, at least the first few nights. In fact, our body heat resulted in us sinking into the mattress, so when he went to turn the first nite, he felt like he was in a fox hole!!

The mattress eventually did reach room temperature…and I talked with a rep at Brookstone during one mall outing…their display model was even softer than ours…they said it was due to the heat of the overhead lights. They suggested putting it on the floor and walking all over to break in the foam. We did that…and it made it softer … and it wasn’t long before my H looked forward to coming home after being away. The foam is a perfect mix of supportive for bad backs/joints, and the right amount of cushion and give so you love being in bed. I agree it is hard to get up in the morning. Relative to all expenditures, the $$ for the right mattress is definitely worth it. I believe Tempurpedic has a 30 day trial? Shop around…so you have confidence if it doesn’t work you can trade for a different model.

Add a NAP blanket from Brookstone and you might never leave the horizontal position.

I do have friends who got a Sleep Number bed…they were very happy with that choice too.

The Tempurpedic warranty only applies if you buy the mattress AND the foundation (which is like a platform). If you only buy the mattress, the warranty will not apply.

We added a memory foam topper to our existing mattress—I love, love it. We covered it with a regular old quilted cotton mattress pad—I think that prevents the problem that some people have with the foam being warm. It compresses the foam a bit, but it is still luxurious. Back probs went away after we got it.
