I have a Dooney and Bourke for everyday that is starting to show its age, and I’m thinking of replacing it. I also have a Kate Spade crossbody iPhone wallet that I got for a cruise last year, since I didn’t want to wear my cruise card on a lanyard and I wanted to be able to carry my phone without pockets. I love it and would carry it more often if I didn’t need my work badge and car keys.
No. Nor do I own a non-designer purse. I have a wallet. Plain, black leather tri-fold.
@BunsenBurner @MomofWildChild Agree with you 100%
Got my Goyard from Barneys (Boston store in Copley Place)–so I know it isn’t a fake. The one my kids bought me is from the same Barneys. I was going to buy a used Goyard on Ebay from a private individual and the seller scammed me. I paid (through PayPal) and never got the bag. Seller sent a registered letter and I signed for it, but there was no bag. Seller said that was proof he sent the bag. Ebay was no help nor was PayPal. The only way I got my money back was because I used an AMEX card and called AMEX to complain. I eventually got a credit from AMEX. Ebay did shut the seller down. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one who got taken.
My current favorite bag is Bottega Veneta. I have the same parachute bag in chocolate brown, black, and taupe. I also wear their shoes, which are wonderful. I just bought another BV bag - a clutch in black that I use constantly. BV is pricey, but I love that they are soft, elegant, have no logos or shiny hardware. They go with everything.
I’m a big bag fan, so don’t be shocked, but I have many Prada, Ferragamo, Tod’s, and Gucci bags (my favorite brands). I also have a purple LV epi leather bag - no logos and nothing that screams LV, but a beautiful color and a really nice bag. I have a few old logo LV bags that I no longer use. I probably have upwards of 50 nice bags, but some are over 30 years old. I take great care of them and most in perfect condition. I’ve given some to my D who uses them as “vintage,” and a few to my sister and niece because they can’t afford to buy expensive bags.
My D also loves nice bags and I’ve given her a few for Christmas and birthdays. I recently bought her a Celine bag, and she also likes Chloe, Prada, and Ferragamo. She wants a monogrammed Goyard bag for her birthday, so I suppose I’ll spring for that.
Ferragamo is a little under the radar brand, but their bags and shoes are the best of the best, in my opinion. Very elegant Italian style that doesn’t scream with logos.
I do have a Tod’s bag from 2003 and it might be my favorite bag ever. The corners are worn, and I need to send it to the place that refurbishes bags. It would be worth it. It is like baseball glove leather and just gorgeous. Plus- great outside pockets!
Ferragamo used to be my favorite brand of shoes. I also loved their ties, and bought several for H.
My purse and bags are Desigual. I love their crazy patterns and colors. Somehow they are the opposite of neutral and thus go with everything.
Have bought Desigual scarves – love them,
You all inspired me!!! I bought a purse!!! I had to go to the mall for something and decided to make a detour to Macy’s where I got a nice, small, blue Fossil crossbody.
Purse blind no more!!
For years I preferred to carry a wallet. Then I got a little older… After setting my wallet down absent-mindedly while shopping a few times (I always found it–but after a frantic retracing of my steps around the store), I decided I needed a wearable wallet. So I use a $10 vinyl cross body bag.
I still have a Coach bag (in the house, somewhere) that my former boss gave me as a going-away gift when I “retired” 24 years ago. I figured someone had noticed that my purse was in bad condition and that I needed a new one. There was also a Coach wallet inside the purse. When I opened the gift at my going-away party, I looked inside the wallet and saw/showed everyone that there was no money inside/made a joke about it. I must have looked a little disappointed–to tell the truth, I was expecting to find some cash in the wallet… A couple co-workers felt obliged to come in my office and “explain” it to me later–that this was a “Coach” bag, and it was an expensive gift in itself. (Maybe $300 for the wallet and bag?) Honestly, paying that much for a bag was completely foreign to me. But I was mortified to think that I seemed to imply that the bag/wallet itself wasn’t a generous gift–that I was looking for more. Tacky of me. But innocently tacky. And tbh, I’d rather have the cash in a cheap bag. I understand that people “classify” others by what they wear/carry. I see things like purses, shoes, clothes, etc. as functional items. I don’t really notice the specific differences or know logos/designers.
This article made me think of this thread: http://money.cnn.com/2017/05/08/investing/coach-kate-spade-takeover/index.html?sr=fbmoney050817coach-kate-spade-takeover0117PMVODtopLink&linkId=37333812
Kate Spade event going on at Nordstrom Rack. They are going fast.
@surfcity Not happy about that. I really enjoy the boutique feel to Kate Spade. I hope it doesn’t lose that touch. Surprised to see this move from Coach though. Their brand has lost quite a bit of it’s luster, so I’m surprised they have the capital to make such a huge acquisition.
Although I’m personally not into designer pursers (utility is my thing), it’s itneresting to read about them. It’s just not a thing I notice… it’s especially fun when posters include links. Also now I get a lot of purse ads too.
I used to love Coach bags back when they were high quality leather and had my share of Dooneys and Kate Spade but for the past few years I’ve been madly in love with the HOBO brand. It began with a wallet from Nordstrom which turned out to be the best designed wallet I’d ever had. When it finally fell apart, I started investigating the newer designs and discovered the bags. For those of you who love soft, buttery leather and beautiful rich colors, do yourself a favor and check them out. The prices tend to start in the low $100s and go up to the mid to high $300s. I probably have at least 6 - 10 handbags of various sizes, colors and styles and several wallets in wonderful colors. Here’s a link to the website:

^^ Hobo bags and wallets are very nice!
I really like my tote bags: Longchamp and Tory Burch. I’ve enjoyed this thread- had to look up some of the designers mentioned.
