Do you play the name game?

Student A: Where do you go to school?
Student B: Tufts
Student A: oh cool! My friend Student C goes there. Do you know him?
Student B: never met him, but that name sounds vaguely familiar…
[awkward pause in conversation]
Student A: so anyway, did you see the Red Sox game last night?

I used to do this in almost every conversation I had, but I stopped doing it because it was very rare that I would find someone who knew anyone I knew. And even if they knew them, it was usually only in passing. I still do it occaisionally however, but only I only bring up unusual or interesting people.

so, do you play the name game?

Yes - but only for obscenely large schools. I.e.

Me: So, you go to Michigan?
Him: Yes.
Me: Do you know John Smith?
Him. Errr…
Me: Come on. With 40,000 students, John Smith. You MUST know him.

Seriously. I find it quite humorous :)
