In our town ,people who don’t maintain their front yard can get a summons or a fine after 14 days of being notified . Do you report neighbors with 12"grass, or ignore it ? I report people from time to time ,as I think an unsightly yard is an annoyance .

Only one house on our street doesn’t have a weekly landscape service do their maintenance so it’s not an issue. :)

good lord what kind of hell do you live in?

JG–are you referring to Post #1 or Post #2, LOL…

Faux, that is definitely a behavior to share with the family of the Swedish boyfriend!

1…measuring yard grass? Reporting people?

Or maybe #2 as well, not everyone can afford a weekly yard service.

It’s the enforcement and measuring that really got my goat. (by the way we do have goats in my neighborhood…who do a very good job of grass mowing…daily).

jgo339 -when grass is uncut for a month ,it looks noticeably different than a lawn cut every 1 or 2 weeks .

We don’t live in that kind of neighborhood. Most people do maintain their houses nicely, with the exception of one person, but there wouldn’t even be anybody to report it to, and most feel it’s not their business… Our yards are probably all pretty average. Nothing is overgrown, but most yards aren’t very pretty either.

The subdivisions we are looking at moving to are different. Everybody uses a lawncare service. I feel like I’m on mars every time we drive through, but people pay big money to live in these beautiful subdivisions. I guess once I am paying that big money I might get annoyed if somebody isn’t taking care of their yard, too.

Emaheevul07 -thank you .Our neighborhood is about 50/50 ,but most yards are well maintained .

Do you report neighbors who don’t maintain their front yard ?

Answer: No

Better to spend my time focusing on my home, yard, family, and life and let others live as they choose.

We purposely moved into a neighborhood that did NOT have a lot of rules. Our front yard (and side yards and back yard) is woods!

Me too! We live in the forest preserves. The only thing that ever gets reported is if somebody forgets to check on the wind before they burn their property in the autumn. And that’s safety and they usually report it themselves.

I think you need a hobby or something if you have enough time to worry about somebody else’s lawn. JMO.

Short answer…No, I wouldn’t report them. If it is a simple matter of delayed maintainence, I think I might try to find out why that is happening (assuming it is happening often…I am going to assume no one would turn them in for a one time offense)…perhaps it is an elderly person, or someone dealing with an illness, or a single mom overwhelmed, someone who is having a difficult time financially and can’t pay to keep the lawn up…things that a couple neighborly neighbors could jump in and help with.
Just mentioning it to the neighbor, or dropping them a note might work too…or check to see if the house may be unoccupied and a management company needs to be notified.

We were just discussing a related issue the other day…how these days so few of us take the time, or make the effort, to have vegetable gardens, but so many spend the time and money (not to mention all the chemicals!) to have a pretty lawn. Seems a shame somehow…like something has been lost there. (BTW-I have neither a garden or a manicured lawn.)

gosh i hope no one reports me!

A house with long grass in the front in our neighborhood is probably a foreclosure. :(

Ugh, we DO have an unfinished house on our pretty road. The guy started it in 2007 and couldn’t afford to finish it. It looks horrible. The bank has been trying to sell it, but anyone who buys it has to pay off a hefty lien imposed by the lumber yard. It’s the first time I’ve been tempted to take a match to something.

the house or the lumberyard? :p

just make sure to check the wind that day. ;)

I"m queen of letting my yard get too high. Not 12 inches… but it’s usually almost 6 by the time I mow it. I’m allergic and no matter how much medicine I take… it literally makes me sick to mow this time of the year. I occasionally hire one of the neighbor kids to mow it for about 20 bucks if I have some spare money and don’t feel like being miserable that weekend.

I hope no one reports me. My lawnmower was picked up for annual servicing several weeks ago when the grass was still dormant. It still hasn’t come back and with alternating downpours and sunny, mild weather I’ve now got a good start on a jungle. Tried to get my in-laws lawn service and the kid across the street interested in a payday but the lawn service is too busy and the kid isn’t interested. I’m still pushing my own mower for the exercise but if I have to wait too much longer it might finally be time for the rider.

too bad you don’t live here, there are two teenage boys on my street who love mowing grass. If only I could get them to do laundry and dishes!!!
