I have friends who do and friends who don’t. Some through private groups and some publicly on their own timeline. Some very transparently share all aspects, especially with cancer diagnoses and subsequent treatments.
I do understand it’s an efficient way to disseminate info/share updates. I know some specifically do because they are asking for prayers.
Just wondering about thoughts on this and your experiences either with your own health journey or with those of friends.
It’s definitely an individual call. I would not choose to discuss my own health on social media. My sister in law does, but because she only kinda-sorta shares, it’s more confusing than it is anything else.
Our friend’s 9 year old battled DPIG brain cancer for two years, and he did post their journey, with his S’s blessing. It was much easier for them to do it through social media than to try to keep the many people who cared individually informed.
I have shared. My husband has shared. I am a nurse and as long as its done in a way that gives updates and facts and isn’t done in a way that is attention seeking, I am fine with reading about others.
I have posted about my appendicitis, covid, and hysterectomy. I dont openly talk about taking a glp-1 but did say my cholesterol was down 100 points. My husband (with the recipients permission and encouragement) talked about donating a kidney 2 years ago.
That would be a firm no for me if we are talking standard social media - FB, Instagram. I don’t post much on FB at all anymore (probably less than 5 posts on a year) and Instagram is where I post interesting sights, activities, events - I guess I would say a glass half full place.
Exception might be a private group with a handful of people.
No, I only share happy stuff on Facebook. I always say that I want my facebook life. I also don’t like it when people over share on Facebook. I will snooze them.
A good friend was going through cancer and eventually passed away. His wife kept us informed through group text, but all recipients’ contact were hidden, so we could only respond to her.
I don’t on FB (general) but might on a group with just my college friends.
When my daughter was in the NICU 30 years ago, back in the olden days, I found that putting an updated message on my home answering machine worked well. People could call and I didn’t have to talk about it over and over. Mostly that was just her weight and any update on her breathing.
Friends who have had kids undergoing treatments have used Caring Bridge to update people. They can post updates, get messages, and don’t have to repeat it over and over. I think you need a log in for it but I don’t really remember as it’s been a while.
I don’t really “do” social media, except here and with a very limited number of people. I would NOT share my health news someplace like FB or instagram I had lots of friends or whatever. If others want to, that’s their choice.
I don’t share anything on social media. I have a mix of friends that share nothing, some that share every detail, and some that post cryptic messages like “off to the ER” with no explanation. I am fine with either of the first two, but get annoyed with the third as there is never any explanation or follow-up no matter how many people ask.
My FB account is set to private. I have 42 people that I post to in there. I know all of them. They are either people I grew up with or are family. There are no random individuals. That being said, I have shared health journeys/news on FB. My family is scattered worldwide (from Australia to Wales to US) so FB allows for keeping connected and sharing what’s happening in our lives.
