Wouldn’t it be nice if these forums had a spellcheck feature? Do you check the spelling of certain words that you suspect you may have not gotten exactly right? I tend to type the word into google, like “seperate” and google comes back with, “Did you mean: separate?” moreso on this forum where you want to set a good example.

I’ve thought about that, also. I am an exceptional speller but the world’s worst typist. I will leave out letters, words, and transpose letters . I have even transposed words but I don’t think spell check will catch that one, huh?

As an aol customer I have the edit feature but on this latest dial-up version there is sooo much crap on their dictionary it is sooo slow. I’ve tried the google thing, too. Still too slow. Any other ideas for the spelling or typing challenged dial-up cave dweller?

Curmugeon,

Is broadband a possibility?

I also have the disconnect from the mind through the hands to the keyboard. Even happens when I write freehand…

gotta upgrade from the tin cans and string…trust me, even in Techsus they have new fangled things!

How about typing out your stuff in MS-Word, and cut and paste into cc?

QED.

Yes, I’ve often thought a spellchecker would be a great function here on CC, so we could correct all the instances of “moreso”, “alot”, “definately”, etc.

I do the MS Word copy & paste thing most of the time; MS spell checker really isn’t that great. I thought I heard the CC moderator state a while back that features like spellchecker and who’s online really slow down system performance, which is why they aren’t implemented.

Ha Ha! (Ho ho), There, that was a fine example, was it not? I googled “moreso” and brought up a “Common Errors in English” website!

More so should always be spelled as two distinct words.

I use dictionary.com. I can’t stand to not have a word spelled correctly if I know it’s wrong. Of course, sometimes I just don’t know!

My gift to you. Firefox, Mozilla openware brower does have a spell check and does work CC. Built in popup and cookie blockers. All for free for personal use.

Is this a veiled finger wagging to those of us who may mispell or not bother with spellchecking?

YIKES!!!

It appears that I have been well and duly shamed by my erudite forum friends!

Consider this line from a recent post I made to a lovely young woman who felt dejected by her Yale EA rejection:

hangs head in shame and blushes

The really disturbing thing is that when I first read this post, I WAS going to say, “Hell NO! I don’t use spell check. I’M perfect!” But alas, I can no longer make that claim. Thanks y’all…I’ve now been properly humbled!

It brings me much comfort to know that my posts and the posts of others will be “evaluated” by readers for usage as well as content. Having smart friends makes me feel superior, and even moreso, it will definately benefit me alot.

itstoomuch, I use Firefox (and love it!) but can’t find the spellchecker. How do I use it? Or maybe I need a newer version of Firefox?

I too am an excellent speller but have to think twice when typing. I often put “their” instead of “there” or "cite: instead of “site”. I also have trouble spelling with sans serif type. Merriam- Webster on my tool bar helps with Fountain Siren’s esoteric word usage. ( or at least esoteric to the “common rabble” like moi.)

I think we need grammar check and sound argument check as well.

I didn’t take it as a finger wagging - threads like the “Grammar Nazi” thread can make a less erudite and intellectual poster feel self-conscious.
