Last year it was really nice out and we got tons of trick or treaters. I bought full size candy bars and ran out in 45 minutes. Bought $50 worth.
So this year I bought the small bars and bought tons of candy, like $50 worth. Probably 300 pieces. It’s been snowing all day (but not sticking). Cold, wet and miserable out. It’s been an hour and not one trick or treaters.
We live in a small housing division out in the country. We rarely get trick or treaters - not many kids and no street lights (we always took our kids into town). Bought some Butterfingers just in case - I don’t like them so no temptation to eat them if no one shows.
I live on a very small cul-de-sac so I get few trick or treaters and it bums me out! I love seeing the kids in costume. The past few years nobody came but just had two come tonight! It makes me happy.
I got nobody until 6:07, so I started giving out 2 pieces of candy each. Now I’m up to 13 and I’m starting to panic I won’t have enough so have got back to 1. Feel guilty but I don’t want to run out. ETA: Now up to 25, so one piece it is!
Well, trick or treating wasn’t supposed to happen today but we got some kids after all. Good thing because I need to unload some of this candy. They were super happy when my husband told them they could take two movie theater sized boxes each and we were named the “best house in the neighborhood!” So easy to please.
Yes, I live on the main drag of a rather large subdivision full of kids plus other families bring their kids and drop them off in our subdivision. 'm sitting here watching the kids, a gazillion of them ring my doorbell and beg for candy and the parents all more dressed up than their kids. Even when my children were small I did not enjoy this holiday…it just isn’t fun to me and I really don’t like candy. Sort of interupts my evening for 3 1/2 hours…ba humbug or whatever you say for Halloween…when you are a party pooper! The kids do have fun so I guess I’m just an old fuddy duddy at this point.
I live on a block that has the lowest ‘Effort to Candy’ ratio in the neighborhood. Houses far apart and you have to climb up steps or long walks to get to front door. We used to get all of our friends and neighbors when our kids were young, but young families have been priced out of the neighborhood. I am not aware of anyone under the age of 16 living within 3 blocks.
So, for the last 3 years we just turned off the lights and made it official. This year I bought candy and I’m going to be ready for the 2, maybe 3 that arrive at the door. Not sure what I’m going to do with the ton of York Peppermint Patties (me) and Reese’s peanut butter cups (H) that are going to be left over. Probably take them to the construction project tomorrow and they will disappear immediately !
The little 3 yr old down the street came and my across the street neighbors grand daughter. That’s it so far. Might get a few stragglers before I turn off the lights around 8. Can’t take much more with two barking dogs going crazy.
We live in a very very dense neighborhood, plus very near city areas that are not good T or T locations, so people drive over here–we get tons. I am past the decorating etc, but would feel bad about not doing the candy. I give two fun-sized per person, except for the overly big kids who may just get one (I told my college students today they’re not kids, stop trick or treating, and they didn’t buy it.) The kid kids I’ve seen have been really cute.
Starting to pick up a bit. Best costume by far was a teenage boy in a black leather jacket and sunglasses with a phone up to his ear, gesturing to be quiet and pointing where to put the candy. The bag indicated he was talking to Russia. Win.
I kind of lost count there, but I think it’s been about 48 so far, with about an hour and a quarter to go. Kit-Kat bars went first. LOTS of little ones 4-6 or so. It’s really cute because mom and dad are watching from a few feet away, but they let the kids ring the bell and say Trick or Treat. For a little one, that can be scary.Others are future actors.( I got about a 3 minute explanation of who he was from Ironman.)
This is just the Trick or Treat part. Over the weekend, our neighborhood had a children’s parade, a festival with a bouncy castle and other things, and a dog costume contest. Next weekend is the great pumpkin smash!
It’s nice because my neighborhood is very diverse and, except for a few Jehovah’s witnesses, everybody celebrates Halloween–Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, et al. It’s the one holiday all the kids share.
Actually, when my kids started school at their Jewish day school, the head of school told them it was a Druid holiday or something. And told them they weren’t supposed to trick or treat, that the Halacha prohibited Jewish kids from participating. The parents ignored that.
I am torn…I love seeing the kids in costume , but it’s a pain in the tush because my dogs flip out with excitement and it means I have to block them off with gates and one of them barks like crazy . I can’t make dinner because of the constant interruptions , so I picked up a pizza
We never really know what to expect in terms of volume. this is the third year with neighbors with nut allergies and the second with me buying special candy for them …they were no shows.
We had 45 kids tonight. Many of their parents were also in costume. About ten of the kids were high school aged and all were in costume. Still lots of Harry Potters, which I love.
