Do you think it's okay to talk about gay marriage in my essay?

I’m pro-gay marriage, and I know Texas is very conservative.

What do you think?

If so, don’t take this risk. Way too risky.
I know one whose essay claimed that he was homosexual got in Harvard. However I don’t think it will work with Texas A&M. It’s really delicate.

You never know who is reading the essay-- usually the first readers are students-- wrong part of the country to publicize this view. If you are looking for like-minded people, you may want to consider the east or west coasts.

Regardless of this school’s conservative nature, it is a good idea in any professional/serious setting to not talk about your specific views or politics. There are always people that will disagree with them and judge you based off of how you portray those views.

I don’t think you should discuss it in any college essay. Writing about your own experience is one thing… randomly discussing a contentious political topic is another.

Personally, I wouldn’t because a&m is conservative but I’ve heard that as long as something is well written they’ll take the time to read it.
Also, are you writing your admissions essay two days before the application deadline?

I would very much disagree with the posted opinions. It is BECAUSE A&M has a reputation for being conservative that having a very well written and researched essay showing an opinion different that what is typical would improve your chances at acceptance. A&M wants to stop being seen as conservative and small-town, so they look for people to accept who broaden their range of students.

But (very important caveat!!!) do NOT do this if:

1) It is inappropriate to the essay prompt
2) You are unable to discuss the issue in a non-inflammatory or insulting way
3) You cannot present a well researched and intelligently worded argument
4) You somehow imply that you are intolerant of people who hold opposing views

To conclude, this could be amazing if done well and help your chances of acceptance, but if it ends up being a stream of consciousness rant, don’t even think about submitting it.

There’s NOTHING else you could possibly write about? I can see how this topic could in fact improve your chances, but it is a risk that you have to take. If the reader happens to be against your views (which is very likely in Texas, especially that area), it will backfire quick. However, if the reader stays unbiased like he/she probably should, this will not be an issue. But my advice would be to stay away from controversial topics.
