I’m not sure if this is similar or not, but I got an email confirming my Walmart.com order. I had apparently set up an account and ordered something at some point years before, but definitely not just then. I logged in and saw an order for something Harry Potter-related, so I checked with and ruled out my kids. It was too late to cancel the order, but I could see a new payment method and shipping address had been added. So I deleted those and changed my password.
When I Googled the shipping address, it turned out to be an elementary school (several states away). I was able to look it up and get emails for the assistant principal and a couple admins. I sent them an “I know this sounds odd…” email, and actually got a response. A teacher there had made the order, paying with Paypal, I think. Nobody (including Walmart) can explain how it got connected to my account. So, I don’t think there was a scam involved (he was paying with his own Paypal account), just a technical glitch. Not sure if that makes me feel any better or not!
Oh and I regularly get the “we will notify the local cops” voice messages too.
I don’t believe this is any way a scam, but I recently started getting lots of emails about job searching and available jobs. It looks like one woman used my email (accidentally?) to sign up for job search sites. I searched her name online and she seems to be a 51 year old woman who lives in Chicagoland, where we lived until 2015 (completely different part of the greater area). Her name is not one that would logically be misconstrued into my email, like initials or such.
Per one web site, “Tiffany DOES have Lawsuits, Liens, Evictions or Bankruptcies.”. I’m not going to pay for the premium search process! And I know a lot of that data can be inaccurate.
I can see no advantage for her using her own name with my email for this purpose. I have been unsubscribing the legitimate sites. I did find one web site with an email for her, but it’s probably a bad idea to let her know what’s happening, even if I send it from an unused and unrelated email, right?
Did any of you get oodles of texts for Kenneth wanting to know who he was going to vote for, then reminding him to vote - over and over again for three months or so prior to the election?
I never responded, but I always wondered if someone named Kenneth used my phone number or if they were typical texting spams. H never received any.
If it’s a legitimate political canvasser, you should be able to just reply “stop”. That’s worked with several for me. Some had my first name, some had other names. Probably too late for this election cycle though.
HA! What a coincidence, this FB Memory just popped up for me from 2014:
I didn’t think I was such a lucky person but my god, 2 days in a row, 2 different contests, 2 different emails!!! This one is worth 4 MILLION $!!! I know, I know most of us would look at the blatant spelling and syntax errors and think SCAM! But hey, it’s FOUR MILLION DOLLARS! They were probably as excited to write & tell me as I am to have won! How could I not share? And you get 10k, and you get 10k, and you get 10k!

For years I got calls at work from bill collectors. Someone with my name apparently had very bad credit. My number was searchable so they called. Always asked if I lived at a couple addresses where I never lived. One person asked me for my social security number. Yeah no, it doesn’t work that way. I asked him to put his manager on the phone and asked the manager for his social security number. He wouldn’t give it to me. Told him now he knew how I felt. He gave me the social security number he was looking for and I said that isn’t mine. At that point they must have put something in their system because the calls stopped.
Amazon must have been hacked. I got an email from “amazon” that said they noticed a suspicious activity in my account and they suspended my account. They asked me to call the number they gave me. It came from xxxamazon.com. It could have been legit. Since I don’t care if they suspend my account or not, I didn’t bother to call the number. It was followed by another email from “amazon” saying something about scamming emails from another “amazon”. I couldn’t really tell which is a scam which is real. Was the first scam and the second real or both scams from the same scammer? I think the latter.
ML Should I care? I will do that if or when I need something from amazon. If it is true amazon suspending my account, they are welcome to until I need something from them. Absolutely no inconvenience on my part.
I posted it to warn people that scammers might have gotten so sophisticated to use scams to scam us. We tend to trust posts warning about a scam, don’t we? I do.
I got a phone call supposedly from Amazon a couple of days ago with a message to call a number if I did not make a $279 order. Otherwise, they would charge my credit card. I did not call the number on the message but instead called the Amazon customer service number that I knew was legitimate. Amazon confirmed that the phone call was a total scam .
I received an email from “amazon” that said I needed to click on a link to deal with an issue in my Amazon Prime account. The tip off that it was fake: I do NOT have a Prime account!!
A easy check is to hover your pointer over the link and read the url address.
Don’t click on anything you didn’t ask for. Drop down the message and see if the Amazon message is properly formatted. This is your first clue. Then if questions. Just call Amazon to verify. They aren’t calling you about an account like ever!.. Just call them and confirm or log on until your account and check or fix.
BTW you can forward those scam emails til them, Google, Apple etc. They do track them and it’s helpful for them.
I had that exact same message yesterday! (Actually it was $279.99) I did double-check my Amazon and credit card accounts, but I was already almost positive it was a scam. I wonder what was on the other end of the phone# they left…?
