Do you wear compression socks on long flights? And other travel ?s

I am wondering if I need them? I have a pair and find them super uncomfortable. I have never had a long haul flight (West coast to HI is less than 6 hours and my recent flight to Spain from west coast had a layover in Toronto.) However, I’ll have a couple of 12ish hour flights on my upcoming trip so I’m wondering if I should take them? Do you? If it makes any difference I have very low blood pressure and resting heart rate (46-48 bpm; 90/60 and recently when donating blood it was 85/53) Is that a factor one way or another?

If you do use and recommend them, what brand?

On another note, I always take my over ear noise cancelling headphones and will this trip too. However, they don’t “fit” with my awesome Cabeau neck pillow which I LOVE. Do you have a neck pillow that you love which doesn’t push your over ear headphones up too far? Which one?

For those who gave me leads on dresses that I can order online…no internet shopping for me today either. I am currently sitting in the parking lot outside Nordstrom trying to work up the motivation to do IRL shopping at the biggish city mall. Wish me luck. Ha. (WA friends- Im at Alderwood…wondering if I should have just driven to Bellevue Square. What’s there that might be better?)

I didn’t but the better half thought she’d have a stroke without - from blood clots. My 87 year old dad is in Asia - has 12 hour flights - he didn’t. I personally should be momful though. While I don’t know why my mom died, my dad always says it was likely an embolism.

So it’s a comfort thing to me and it can’t hurt if you want to wear them. I get up and go to the bathroom enough - and i know that’s supposedly helpful as well.

So if it makes you feel better - even to put them on mid-flight, I don’t see why it would cause harm - but unless you are at high risk, likely not necessary.

The AHA says they are fine but not proven to do anything.

Dr. Eri Fukaya, a vascular medicine specialist at Stanford University in California, said flying can indeed create “a perfect storm for a clot.” But other factors come into play first.

People who are older, smoke, have obesity or have a family history of severe clots are at higher risk of VTE, as are people who have previously had such clots, she said. So are people who have recently been treated for cancer or take estrogen.

Have a nice trip

I would check REI. CEP compression sleeves (not socks!) is what I like. You can wear regular socks with them.

I’ve been wearing Sockwell compression socks for years, mainly because my ankles have a strong tendency to swell. I wear them not only on airplanes, but anytime I will be standing for a long time - or long walks. I find them very comfortable, unlike the compression socks hospitals give you.

I’m not in any high risk category and have never worn them. I just make sure to stay well hydrated and move around frequently.

I’m not at high risk for any issues but I have started to wear them on long haul flights. I like the Bombas compression socks–they are pretty light compression compared to some brands and I don’t mind wearing them for long periods. I also wear them around the house after running or after a long hike.

REI is across the 405 from the Belsquare. I was killing time at Belsquare yesterday, and the place was busy! J Jill, Johnny Was, Tommy Bahama, Talbots, Chicos, etc. might have some dresses you might like. Haven’t been to Alderwood in ages, so can’t tell if they have these stores or not.

I wear compression socks on any long plane trip. Otherwise, I can’t get my shoes back on at the end of the flight (I have Bomba slippers I wear on the planes…shoes off).

I have them, so I wear them if an international flight or if US/non-summer. But… they are not especially tight on me, can’t be sure how much good they do. They do seem a good material for enable rewear without washing, which helps justify the packing space (we tend to move around to several destinations).

REI moved over next to The Rack, across from Barnes and Noble.

There’s a JJill in the outdoors area; lots of dresses at the moment. Nordstrom moved everything around and it just seems lacking.
Uniqlo is down the East end of the mall. EverEve outside past the Apple Store.
The Macy’s is lousy.

I don’t go to Bell Square very often, but there are more stores to choose from.

I don’t wear compression socks in my day to day life, but I do wear them on flights that are over 6 hours or so. (And I’m someone that sits on the aisle and makes a point to get up and down regularly as well). Even while being somewhat active on a plane, I find that compression socks make a significant and noticeable difference in how I feel during the first few days of the trip - my legs and feet have more “energy” so to speak and I have less swelling over all and I just feel better.

The “Sockwell Elevation” socks are what I’ve used on all international flights for the last seven years. They’re very comfortable. When I was last in Japan I wore them for a few days when it was very hot, but I was walking about 12 miles a day - it helped tremendously with swelling and fatigue.

I’m about 5’2” and 110lb and I wore the women’s small.

I hadn’t even thought about there being a benefit to how i might feel the couple days after we arrive. Thanks for that tip.

I wear them on very long/international flights. There are lots of options to choose from these days so no need to wear any that are uncomfortable.

I have high blood pressure but it’s controlled by meds. I do wear compression socks for long flights, I definitely wore them flying/ from Australia. I will likely wear them this fall when I travel to Europe. I make a point of walking up and down the aisle on the plane.

You wouldn’t believe how packed it is here (Alderwood) today. I don’t know what’s going on this week, but yesterday in Costco there were 15 to 20 people in every line (lines back to and through the clothing section ).

Thanks for the mall comparison. I’ll probably hit BS before I start packing. Haven’t been there in a over a year.

Just watch out for loose dogs at Belsquare! Yesterday I almost tripped over a retractable dog leash with an adorable Akita at one end and a clueless couple at the other! Don’t waste your time going to the Rack across the street. Large and underwhelming.

Our DD wears compression socks to work. She is on her feet for 8-10 hours straight. She says they are a must for emergency room staff who are on their feet that long.

I wear compression socks like regular socks. I like the support.
I don’t know about what kind of pillow to buy, but I have a good recommendation for noise cancellation earbuds - Bose. They are small and very comfortable. When I wear mine I do not hear anything.

I bought this little inflatable pillow for our trip and it was wonderful on the plane and the bus. I have arthritis in the neck and have a separate inflatable pillow for sleeping. But this was exactly right for sitting up and supporting my neck. I don’t know how it works with headphones because I don’t use them.

My mom was a nurse, and she always wore compression stockings. My first job required me to be on my feet, walking miles a day on a concrete floor … I wore compression stockings. I was in a more sedentary job when I was pregnant, but I wore compression stockings. If I were ever to take a long plane flight, I would wear compression stockings. It just makes sense to me, and it’s honestly not a big deal in terms of comfort.
