Doctor Who for UMich Essay 1

The shorter UMich supplement asks about a community I belong to. One of the suggestions is an interest community. Is writing about the Whovian community risky or clever?

It’s fantastic.

As long as you type out a developed story about Doctor Who (its influence, how it impacted you, whatever direction), I think it’s fair game to type up.

Bump

I’d agree with smallkid9. As long as it’s done well, your essay could be very interesting and unique. I would go for it.

The topic is not the problem and it actually sounds very interesting. Just remember to focus on how the community affected you and how you affected the community—this is what the admissions officers are looking for.

I think the issue is that if your admissions officer isn’t into Dr. Who – well, it will be hard to pull off. Also, one reason they ask that question isn’t just to see how a community has affected you, but how YOU have affected a community. Now… if you have truly contributed to the community in a productive way, then it makes sense. But if you are more of a passionate but somewhat passive fan, it isn’t going to be the best choice.

@d33d33 @intparent I will definitely tred carefully with this. My other option is to right something about the multicultural city I live in (Dearborn, MI) but I’m sure every other applicant from my area will do such. DW has had a big impact on me and I’ve had a smaller impact on it (spreading it to my family.) So yeah, it’s a risk but oh well.

So…spreading DW to your family isn’t really going to stand out to an admissions officer as contributing to a community.
