We are trying to help our D move from OR to RI for medical school. She has a very good bed and we want to move at least the mattress as she has back problems. We can replace the box springs there.
One option is to rent a 2012 Dodge Caravan and, as all of the seats fold down into the cargo, move her mattress inside. It is a queen and is L78 W59 (somewhat bendable).
While we would like to move other stuff this is the only important concern. We could buy new but this is a known to her and so would like to check out our options.
The price for renting the minivan is crazy good while or other option is about $1,000 higher.
Anyone!? and thanks!

If you have all the seats folded down to fit the mattress can you still all fit in the van?

SO! that is THE question…can the somewhat flexible but still 10" deep mattress fit in at an angle and still shut the cargo door with the drivers in their seat?? Or will the mattress need to have driving lessons? For the difference in $ it is worth asking some, hopfully, minivan drivers.

Oh, and yes, it seems that the Length is OK

Don’t know if this helps, or if the interior of minivans have changed much in 14 years, but way back when my older s bought a bed (I am 99% sure it was a queen) at IKEA and, as a then budding engineer, carefully calculated the space of the interior of our then 1998 Toyota Sienna minivan and the matress.HOWEVER it didnt have a box spring. It had a bedframe and slats for the bottom. But all these boxes fit in the minivan. We were only taking it from the store across town, though.

We just rented a Dodge Caravan Stow & Go to move S1 home from college after graduation last week. Just my husband went to get him, so only the passenger & driver seat were used, the rest all folded down all the way, and the amount of room was incredible. We did not take the mattress, but could have fit it and much, much more. Just be sure the rental company confirms it is a Stow & Go. One year we went to pick up the van, and all they had was another model on the lot (can’t recall what) and the seats didn’t go flush to the floor. It was bad!

S2 and I rented a minivan for a move from CT to WI. We didn’t take a mattress – he bought one when we got to WI – but we put the seats down and loaded that puppy up to the gills. S2 likened loading it to playing Tetris – turning things upside down and sideways in order to get them to fit with the least empty space between them. The van held an incredible amount of stuff – two small tables, an upholstered chair, speakers, numerous musical instruments, vinyl records by the box load, boxes of clothes, and two people.

Enjoy the road trip – that’s really the best part.

You likely would be okay if it’s just two of you who will be making the trip. That’s a long drive, though, just to transport a mattress, especially if you have to drive it home, too!

Been there, tried that. Our Dodge Caravan is older, so the newer ones may be bigger, but we could not fit a queen mattress into ours. If it’s a very flexible one you may be able to cram it in but it’s not good for the mattress to be bent like that, especially for a more than a quick trip.

Can you rent a cargo van or something bigger?

Don’t have a Dodge Caravan, but did move DD’s mattress and box spring in a Honda Odyssey a few months ago. It was a full size bed, not a queen, and the box spring just fit. Even if you can fit the mattress in the van, which I would guess it possible but a tight fit, it will be bent for quite some time. Do you think it will straighten out properly?

Will the cost of renting the minivan for a one-way trip be greater than the cost of buying the same mattress new at the other end?

Renting a minivan is crazy cheap. I think that is because they have more on the West coast and need them driven to the East It would be about $1,000 cheaper. Her bed is worth about $800-900 but the real issue is that if she gets a new one and her back hurts she will not have the time to deal with it. We are committed to getting it there. Also she is 28 and would like some of her kitchen equipment and such. She will be there for 4 years so seems wothwhile to figure out. We could ship through a moving company but the logistics of having someone on the other end to get into her apartment for delivery seems complicated.
When I moved from PA to CA for grad school my stuff did not arrive for a few weeks so I was sleeping on the floor and had one lawn chair. The next move went exactly as the first as I started a new job. Not the end of the world and I survived but am happy to put my experiences to rest and not have D have the same.
