My brother just finished his first semester of junior year in high school. He’s an IB student taking a rigorous, weighted curriculum. He had all A’s this last semester, and feels that he can continue getting these grades as long as he works hard.

The problem is, last year during his sophomore year he received an F in the first semester of honors physics (the 2nd semester he got a B). Besides that 1 F, all of his other grades from freshman and sophomore year are A’s and B’s, while first semester junior grades are straight A’s (as I already mentioned).
He has taken chemistry and bio so he will have completed the science requirement, but he is shooting for UC Davis when he applies to university next year and wonders if it’s out of the question? His weighted cumulative GPA is over a 4.0 but then there’s that 1 F…(since it was honors he can’t retake it either…)
Obviously there are a lot of other factors to admission but should someone with 1 F even bother applying at all to UC Davis, even with good-to-great scores and decent extra-curriculars?
