does a 3.80 automatically kick me out?

i have a 3.80 (about 12 trimester B+'s) and on top of that i’m an ORM. however, i do go to an extremely rigorous, unranking private–think the exeter/andover of the midwest; and i moved halfway thorough high school so my grades “excusably” dropped from a 4.0 uw to 3 B+'s a semester.

i don’t know my rank, but i do know that i’m considered on of the “smart” people that are expected to get into some ivies, but of course, they haven’t seen my transcript, so that’s not entirely reliable. what i do know is that my recs will quantitatively classify me in “top 5%” mostly and even in “one of the best” in a few categories. my standardized testing and ECs are solid as well (i have an artist “hook,” so to speak)… see my post history for more details.

will this 3.80 pretty much guarantee an SCEA deferral–>reject or an outright rejection? is it even possible for me to get in? 'cause yale is my #1… and i want to get in!

Nope, it’s a holistic approach when they look at your application, so it’s definitely not automatic.
I mean, if you recieved the equivalent of a teen nobel peace prize or something, a few average grades won’t mean your rejection.
However, do keep in mind that the pool is tougher in the SCEA even with the higher %age of students admitted because there are more qualified applicants. You’ll need to do your best to stand out.
Just do the best you can to present yourself to them, and keep the grades up! Good luck!

true, but i’ve yet to see an orm with grades like mine get in scea.

what a lot of people dont realize is that going to the Exeter/Andover of the west puts you at a huge advantage. Colleges view getting a B+ at a difficult prepartory school such as Exeter as equivalent to an A at a public school honors class. If you have impressive extra curriculars (at least one leadership position) and 2100+ on the SAT you’ll have an okay shot at an ivy if you have good recs/essays.

The CC applicant pool is extremely different than the regular applicant pool. They tend to be be on the upper echelon of applicants. There are definitely kids with 3.8 GPA that get into Yale. Yes, even ORMs.

It’s not about URM vs. ORM in terms of grades. As I said, many ORMs get into Yale (the majority of students are ORM) and a lot have your stats. You just need to stand out.

So, in conclusion, your 3.8 GPA does not make you an automatic deferral/reject.

thanks for all the replies! but for some reason i find it really really hard to believe an ORM with a 3.80 could get in SCEA. hopefully you guys are right, that i’ve been spending too much time on CC–which is true regardless of this GPA dilemma. lol.

any other thoughts?

LOL, of course it doesn’t disqualify you. i know people with lower gpas who have gotten in. but that’s all you have going for you (read: no ecs) then ehh…

Sorry to sound insensitive, but you’ve been saying this same line for quite a long time now (multiple times), and lol, it’s been done…you can’t change it, you’re going to apply anyways, why keep worrying about it?

[I’ve had the grade experience too, I’m not an all A student either] I’d rather spend my time doing stuff I like in the time worrying about this stuff. A little is understandable, yours seems chronic. Chill out a little and do enjoyable stuff, like eating or sleeping. GL.
