So I’m a rising junior chemical engineering student and, just out of curiosity, was wondering whether departments give students a class ranking or something? Thanks for any responses!

I think for certain honors societies they will pull together everyone’s gpa’s and take the top 20-30% or something, but I would be very shocked to see an individual ranking given to you.

They dont assign ranks. They do post mean and median gpas by major though, so you could figure it out approximately.

Thanks for the responses!
I was just curious since one of my friends (who’s gonna me a senior), told me that he was top 8% of his class for EE.
Ill just go with the flow and see what happens.

Ranking in college doesnt matter. Employers only care about the degree and the gpa (other things also like experience, activities, interview, etc)…but no one will ever ask you about ranking. Personally never heard of a major ranking students. Maybe he just knows everyones gpa and ranked himself…or was selected to an organization that is for the top 10% of this major or w/e. idk

^ It is probably that he got into an honor society for his major that accepts a certain percent of the class so he knows a approximation.

Thanks for the replies! I’m planning on joining the Che Engr honor society next year so maybe ill learn something about that then.

They will rank you by percentage. I was top 8.5% or something in College of Science and got letters/Dean’s Scholar Lists
