I volunteer at the hospital and I have become very close with some doctors and nurses. One doctor has even asked if I wanted a recommendation letter from him. On the Common Application for Stanford, we are allowed one option "Other Recommender’ and I have decided to get it from the doctor I work with at the hospital. I believe it will be a strong application because he has seen my work ethic and passion for medicine. Will using my optional recommendation for a doctor look better than, say, asking my mom or dad (which is allowed too)?
Do not have a family member write a letter of recommendation for you. Choose someone who can comment objectively about your skills and personality. Examples could include a supervisor at your job or volunteer work, a coach, etc. IMO whether that person is a doctor or not is secondary compared to someone who really knows you well enough to write a detailed letter commenting specifically on your strengths in a personal way… But definitely not your parents!
Remember that colleges are not medical schools so don’t care about your interest in medicine.
If you choose this recommender, it should be more than @aneem00 is really interested in medicine and works hard.
How does that help Stanford?
Unless it is aneem00 is one of the top 1% of volunteers I have ever worked with on the HS level
A rec that you work hard can help, say, when you go for a paid job and want to show you’re trustworthy, etc. College adcoms aren’t looking for confirmation of that and how much you “want” to be a doc. You should be able to describe your work in ways that show the value. The various ways you use your time should speak for you. Stanford’s going to get plenty of kids who think it’s a boost that they really, really want a med future. It’s not. What matters is the choices you make, what that “shows.” All of it.
