Does an internship count as employment?

Does it? Hmm? HMMMM?

Hmmmmmmmmm???

So does it?

No. Being employed is very different. However internships are still good because it shows your interest in learning. Jobs are still better to have.

I actually would say it does – anything you go to work to do on a regular basis seems like employment to me, especially if you get paid to do it.

In what way is an internship not employment?

I’d list it as a job, yeah. Though don’t stress too much - if you list it as an EC or summer activity instead, Admissions will take that too.

Don’t if this question is refering to addmissions or to seeking a job after graduation. I can’t answer the admission side but would assume that the same logic holds as the employment side.

As a hiring engineering manager, I would always count internships as employment as long as they were in an engineering type field and the work engineering type work. After all, you are getting practical experience with an internship. Counting internships, I was usually able to offer a higher starting salary than one with no experience.

I’m confused by what you’re saying. I shouldn’t list it as a job if I’m seeking a real job after graduation, but then you said you always count them as a employment yourself. Maybe I’m just interpreting this wrong.

^I think there’s supposed to be a “know” after the first word of the first sentence – “Don’t know if this question is referring to admissions…”

Ahh thanks mollie. That’s probably what he/she meant.

Would you guys still consider it employment if it was an unpaid internship?

You are correct that I left the word “know” out. Should proof read my inputs better.

Paid or unpaid, it is still job experience in my opinion.

My son just graduated in June from Cal Poly SLO with a BS in mechanical engineering. I believe he got the job that he did because the experience he got from an unpaid research project he did with one of his professors the previous summer. It was just the experience the company was looking for.

I see. Thank you!
