What’s fluffier? The 20 dollar notes or the 50’s?
I’m really not a fan of futons. I’d rather go the deep comfy sofa route than a futon. JMO.
There’s a new style sofa bed with a firm, wide bottom cushion and with a trundle/ platform made out of the same material that pulls out and up to create a queen-sized sofa surface. I’m trying to decide between that style and the regular pull-out style. Also, some of the pull-out ones now have air mattress tops that you inflate after you pull them out. But those seem like more of a hassle.
I like having the ability to use a “real” mattress in the American Leather couches…has anyone owned/slept on one?
We are looking to replace the sectional we have , but not finding any decent replacements. The one we have just doesn’t work with the furniture we have bought in the last few years. We are thinking about going with a sofa and loveseat combo, or maybe a grandmother’s chair…the sectionals we have seen are just HUGE cumbersome pieces that would swallow the room. I have yet to find a comfortable sleeper sofa. I agree with thumper’s suggestion for an aerobed. I sleep on one when I visit my daughter and it is surprisingly comfortable
- Check into a murphy bed. I had a sofa bed in law school. Hated it. So I'm biased but ...
- I've slept much better on top of actual sectional sofas. In other words, if the back pillows come out so there's a wide sleeping space, it's comfortable, especially with a foam pad.
Our den/guest-room has a twin bed/mattress with another in popup below -

You can buy much nicer units with pretty daybed details. But we thought this design seemed more solid. We bought real twin bed mattresses, and our guests claim they are very comfortable. When a couple visits, we pop up the lower mattress to make a 2-part king.
Colorado mom, do you have it done up as a bed or as a couch-look-alike on a daily basis when you don’t have overnight guests? How does it work for seating? My den will mostly be used in seating-social mode, but I want the option of using it as a guest room on the relatively rare occasions I have overnight guests.
I have this. Very comfortable memory foam http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/alaina-sofa-bed-queen-sleeper-77w-x-40d-x-35h?ID=948933&CategoryID=29391%23fn=sp=1&spc=22&kws=Queen%20Sofa&slotId=16/
its made by american leather.
nottelling - per post #26, we bought a daybed comforter set that includes pillow shams. (We don’t use the skirt). We prop the pillows against the back wall. It would not be comfortable for long term social sitting.
We have a sofa bed that I amended with a 2" thick pad of memory foam on top of the mattress. I bought it at Jennifer Convertibles and that was recommended to me by the sales person rather than upgrading the mattress. I can still fold the whole thing up together. I’ve slept on it and it’s quite comfortable!
In the past, we had a sofa bed where there was an air mattress on top of the regular mattress - all one piece. That was comfortable too but eventually the air mattress stropped holding air and we tried to just lay an air mattress on top but it wasn’t the same.
Sure am seeing the American Leather brand mentioned a lot. Sounds like you should check that out!
We bought several American Leather chairs that had flaws in & damage to the leather upholstery upon delivery. Neither the local dealer nor AL dealt with the problems to our satisfaction. I’m not suggesting that no one buy their furniture, but do be certain that your local dealer is reputable and will stand behind whatever they sell. I would not buy from AL again.
You may want to check out Room & Board or Crate & Barrel.
That’s too bad. The sleeper sofas I saw at Room and Board and Crate and Barrel were made by American Leather, as is the one Jym linked to at Macy’s. The more I look the more I see how extensive their reach is in this market.
^^^Ha ha. Funny!
We solved the pull out sofa bed problem by purchasing a special mattress and throwing away the thin mattress that came with the sofa bed. The mattress has the same thickness ‘spring’ mattress, but has another 4" layer of air mattress on top. When the bed is needed, you pull it out and then pump air into the top layer. After the air is released, it collapses down to the size that can be folded back into the sofa. So, it has the aero bed comfort but is raised to bed height and can be stashed away into the sofa.
These can be purchased online for about $300 (I think) and they make a world of difference.
^^^Wow, that sounds awesome.
Coralbrook, when are we next invited to sleep on your great mattress? Sounds great! Maybe a slumber party for the sale of you fabulous SDiego house?
