I will be downsizing into a 2 bedroom home. I don’t want to give up my second bedroom by decorating it with a bed and dresser but I have 2 grown kids who will be visiting frequently and I want to have a comfortable place for them to sleep.
I would love to turn the second bedroom into a den with a sectional couch and large screen tv. But I want a sectional that looks very stylish, yet converts into a really comfy bed…does something like this exist?
We have two aerobeds. They are our “guest room”. They fold up into a nice bag, and can be stored just about anywhere. My guests find these very comfortable. To be honest, I think they are more comfortable than a sofa bed.
At this point, we also still have a guest room too, with a bed.
My kid who loves far away also has a aerobed for when he has guests…has had one since grad school.
I should add…the only sofa bed we ever had that was comfortable both as a sofa, and as a bed was made by Stearns and Foster. It had an innerspring mattress, and you really could not feel the metal bar beneath the mattress. It was also firm seating as a sofa…and some sofa beds are not.
When we got rid of the sofabed, we opted for the aerobeds instead.
Would a sectional fit? Maybe you’d be better off with a sleeper sofa (of good quality) and a side chair - that way if you have a guest, they still have the option of keeping the bed open but having a side chair for reading, watching tv, computer work, etc. When you look for a sleeper sofa make the store associate open one up for you to see (how thick the mattress is) and feel (yep, lay down on it!).
I do not know if they carry sectionals but American Leather has amazing couches and they come in many style choiceso they might. Their mattresses are memory foam and they do not have a bar in the middle. We plan on getting one when we downsize. They are not inexpensive. Also, somehow they have managed to have a small thumbprint even for a queen or a king which we would want as kids bring spouses to visit.
Take a look at the brand Stendmar. They have several different grouping styles. One even goes from a sectional couch to one queen and one twin bed. These are very popular in the Vacation Rental By Owner market.
My d refuses to sleep on a sofa bed. I am thinking murphy bed when I redo her room to a guest room. They have some that have couches in front, or some that are camouflaged to look like cabinets, I even saw one (on-line) with a mirror. Oh - and an electric one that goes into the ceiling. That one is just too cool! Google murphy beds.
We have a very nice built in, in cherry, Murphy bed. It is a queen. The main problem is that any other furniture in the room has to be move to open the bed. While it has worked it has made the room very difficult to decorate.
Agree that we’ve used futons–for our guests and family members as well as slept on ourselves. I am not a fan of aerobeds and have slept on sevearl that deflate to the ground, waking you up. S bought a nice sleeper sofa from Ikea that has worked pretty well. It is a full-size bed and pretty comfortable. We slept on it for a week and niece slept on it for a month.
@oregon101 – interesting that you mention American Leather! I was just looking at one of their sleeper sofas at Room and Board (in a fabric not leather). I have a small library/ den and the comparatively small footprint for a queen-sized sleeper sofa appeals to me. Plus it looked pretty great. Do you know anyone who has actually slept on one? It is so hard to tell how comfortable it would be.
I knew someone who had decided to purchase one but am not sure if they have yet.
It is considered a very good brand.
Did you lay down on it for a full 15 minutes??
Honestly, I don’t really think sofabeds can be that comfortable. Maybe if you got a really expnsive one… We have owned several and nobody ever wanted to sleep on them. On the other hand, we have had many guests sleep on deep sofas with the back cushions removed. The key is that the sofa needs to be deep, such that it is nearly twin-bed-wide when the back cushions are removed.
We’ve been shopping for a high quality sofa bed that a human being can actually sleep comfortably on: American Leather. No ugly exposed brackets when u pull it open. There are options on the firmness of the mattress, body style, armrest shape, fabric or leather finish. A leather queen-size will set u back 6k-- expensive, but consider what a conventional high-end mattress costs. Dealer said these sofabeds are designed for people who use them primarily as a bed, then fold it up occasionally if they are entertaining.
I bought a basic futon and then invested in a more expensive mattress. I don’t like sofa beds, and didn’t feel like paying money for the other aspects- the springs, material, design. I figured, if a comfortable sleep was the main thing I cared about, then putting my money into the mattress made the most sense. I also bought a mattress topper to put on it when it is made into a bed. It’s very comfy.
