My daughter just got her SAT scores which are 1400 & her ACT composite was 31 which come out nearly identical…just a different balance because SAT was stronger in Math but ACT was stronger in the English. She wants Engineering for college so should she just forget about the ACT altogether or submit both to demonstrate strengths in both?
To answer the question in the subject — Both of my kids did both tests and yes we submitted information for both. Whether it was the “right” thing to do or required by the schools, I can’t really speak to. However, both did generally well on both tests (ACT a little bit better) and both did well in the admission results.
I will say sticking to SAT only is cheaper because you only have one fee to send all SAT scores (and subject tests) to a school. The ACT charges for each set of scores to a school. (And for engineering, you will most likely have to send subject tests)
Thanks Clarethemom–this is new to us and I have heard that you should just plan to submit one or the other, not bothI guess it just depends on the individual situation. thanks
You’re welcome. I’m sure someone else will chime in with more definitive advice.
yep…no rush here…it’s a long road ahead anyhow - lol!
We submitted both, didn’t need to. (I imagine that 1400 is just for the CR and M scores?)
I think the part about that I was a little confused on (and decided, what the heck, just send them both so never really investigated) was when some schools stated that you must send “All test scores”. I wasn’t sure if ONLY meant all sittings of the same test (i.e. all SAT scores) or if it meant truly ALL test scores (both ACT and SAT if both were taken).
SAT break is (660V and 740M) while ACT was 33 Eng 32 Rdg 30 Math 30 Sci 30 - and I heard colleges only look at the composite score for the ACT. I was thinking that the higher Math on the SAT would be more beneficial for the engineering schools and that the 30 math could possibly hurt her if the schools saw that. She is taking the SAT II in Chem and MATH.
I know it’s late, but I’m assuming you are applying this fall for colleges, so I thought I might be able to help. If she is positive that she wants to do engineering I may say refrain from sending the ACT. Her SAT scores are very good, and the math is on-par for many great institutions, but a 30 math and science for the ACT is a little low for top ones. I don’t think it would be make-or-break either way, but just my .02$. If she changes her mind on engineering definitely send both, and check the averages of the places she applies to; if 30 is under average then do not send it. Also, congratulations on great scores! I’m sure she’s going to do great in admissions!
