Does anyone dream about retiring internationally?

With healthcare a major obstacle for retiring on the early side here, maybe we should go elsewhere. I think about Spain, France or maybe Panama. Anyone else?

An old friend retired early to Mexico. They returned to the states after a few years, to be able to visit with family more easily. After everything I have gone through with my parents and now my in laws, I honestly don’t want to be far from family as I age.

Nope. I would want to travel internationally, but NYC would always be home. It’s where my kids, mom and friends are. We also have the best medical care, public transportation, take out/delivery food/grocery/alcohol/drug (anything), entertainment…the list goes on.

We plan to snowbird internationally. It was supposed to start this year. Not sure about full time. I guess that could depend upon what happens to this country.

As former expats, the answer is YES! Not sure where yet - but 4-6 months a year in a new area/country is a goal for us. I think it also helps that our kids have moved enough times that they don’t have a physical home attachment too.

ME, ME!

No idea where, though. My goal is to rent out our home for the summer months (we are in a popular summer rental beach town) and spend each summer living in a different country. I imagine eventually we will figure out where we might like to stay permanently.

In my head sure. Thought Italy would be great for a few months then the virus hit and now thinking. Well, maybe not… Love to be able to do different countries for extended periods of time but maybe have a home base somewhere. I gotta few years but keep reading expat sites… Lol

Yes, I plan on the UK, the health benefits and public transport sealed the deal.
I am British but have lived in the US for over 30 years.

Ooh, I would love to retire in another country! Switzerland comes to mind immediately, but I’d be open to other countries as well.

I plan on traveling internationally each yr but would not choose to live outside the US. Will look to do an annual extended trip of about a month in a different country each yr. Had been thinking about a second home somewhere but like the idea of AIrbnb for long term trips to give more flexibility. Will want to visit with the kids and friends too much to live outside the US.

Hoping to have a base here and travel. Some of it will depend on where my kids end up. I lived in Poland in the Peace Corps for two years and Spain for two years. I loved living abroad but don’t want to be that far away from family. There are lots of upsides to the abroad life however–I can see why people do it.

I have dual citizenship and could live in the EU fairly easily but I can’t imagine moving abroad if my D is in the US.

Our plan is to one day downsize to a condo and rent a home abroad for 3 months at a time in different locations.

My wife and I have dual citizenship in our country of birth and have an apartment there, so we think about it sometimes. She spends enough time there, owns property, pays taxes that she has full social benefits. More likely we’ll just spend more time there after retirement because the kids and my parents are here.

We’ll likely spend have a second home in another country. Snowbird style. We like the food, people, culture and beaches there more than FL ( and costs are about the same). Have looked into the legal aspects of it too. Also will be bit of an insurance policy in case things go badly in the US. We started paperwork back in April. Takes time.
We would spend about 4-6months there annually. Would keep our home in the US as well.
No issue at all with getting the kids to come. They talk about going as soon as covid is over. They have always loved travel and would come if possible. We’d also bring my father. He likes it too and the kids love having him around. He doesn’t dive but he still swims.
We’ve gad two houses before and realize it’s lots of work so might be the kind of thing where we own it til we’re too old to go ( for medical reasons) then pass it on to our kids.

Yes! Before Covid, it was already in the works. My husband and I have always had a plan to split our time between the US and somewhere abroad once our S23 twins started college. I want to buy an investment property in Turkey, something that I/We can use as a semi retirement home and also rent out as a vacation property when we’re not there.

I started taking Turkish language classes earlier this year, and will continued until I’m fairly fluent, once the pandemic slows down I’d love to go do an immersion program in Istanbul.

Our goal is to be able to go scout out potential properties in the next year and a half.

Yep! We are thinking of starting slow, a month somewhere when it’s winter in the northeast, tryout different places. Panama does appeal to me long term due to the4th best healthcare ranking in the world along with the pensionado program.

The part time international concept is on our radar as well. We can’t decide on a “forever” retirement location so I’m thinking about downsizing to a modest condo and doing month-long (ish) visits to whatever strikes our fancy. Unsure where the condo might be - we have few ties to our current location, the kids are scattered in places we don’t especially want to move to, and getting DH to actively participate in the process is like herding jello.

Which country/island? We’re still shopping. For us we want English speaking and mountains. We’re not as fond of the flat islands and while I can handle French and H can sort of do ok with Spanish, neither of us wants to live anywhere where we don’t speak the native language for most people. We’ll travel anywhere, but where we buy is different.

At times I thought that this is what we might want to do, but NOPE, not a chance. My kids and grandbaby are way too important to me and I want to be able to see them frequently and easily. Right now, we are only a few blocks away from DD and GS, and it makes things so lovely and casual.
