Does anyone have any leads or tips on reasonable D.C. housing rentals?

Our son is beginning an internship at the Brookings Institution near Dupont Circle in September and plans to remain in Washington for at least the next year. Even though it’s a paid internship, it doesn’t pay much. Do you know of any apartment or shared house rentals coming open in that vicinity?

My kid found a room in an apartment with another kid is the same gender near American university when she had an internship in DC.

How would you define “reasonable?” Have him look at Craigslist and FB housing groups to see if anything comes up.

He can check with the alumni office - alums working in DC may be helpful. Brookings should also provide some ideas - will there be other interns?

There is a fb housing group with am reasonable rentals.

Craigslist seems to be the way. S lived in Washington for 6 years post college. For most of that time, he lived in a 4 bedroom house. Overtime a roommate moved out, they would post the opening on Craigslist. They never had a problem filling the space immediately. For his last year, S got his own place. He left DC for grad school before the lease was up. He posted the sublet opening on Craigslist and once again, found a subletter immediately.

Padmapper is a website with some info about available spaces but it tend to be an entire unit rather than a room in a place.

@gadad, no advice for DC housing but congratulations to your son on his internship. I worked at Brookings for several years while in my 20s and loved it. I still keep in touch with several of my coworkers from those years, 20+ years later. I hope he enjoys it.

My niece lives in DC and made the choice to live in the city, not take a car, and walk everywhere. She lives in a closet, but she wanted to live alone and that’s what she could afford. Her rent is about $1400/mo, I think, but include utilities (except internet). It is a secured building.

I think she walks about a mile to work (around the White House). She has friends who have cars, so gets to go to Costco or ‘big’ stores about once a month, but otherwise makes do with the tiny stores in the neighborhood, and Amazon.

I’ve been told that some live in Arlington or somewhere on the metro and then just catch the metro to DuPont Circle, since lodging is more expensive in DuPont Circle. Our S lives in Arlington, near a metro stop. His cousin plans to live in S’s living room (on a pull-out sofa bed) and catch the metro to his residency at DuPont Circle until he finds something that works better for him.

Great suggestions - thanks all!
