Does anyone know which gov’t-funded program in CA hires college kids as tutors?

Hi, I heard about a program in California that is funded by the gov’t in which college students go to middle schools/jr. high and tutor kids.

I haven’t been able to find any info on this or where I can apply or even what the name of such program is.

Do any of you know or can any of you direct me to a site where I could find out about this?

Thank you in advance.

You may be thinking about Upward Bound. Check out their website at http://www.ed.gov/programs/trioupbound/index.html.

What school are you at? You can try checking out if your school participates in Upward Bound. I have a friend at Berkeley who is an Upward Bound math/science tutor.

Send me a PM if you want more info. There are several groups/contacts at a few CA universities that I can try to direct you to.

Also try Americorps. They are national but hire tutors and for every year you work for them you are rewarded w/ increasing $$ in the form of scholarship money that is guraranteed if you live up to your end of the bargain.

Thanks for those links historymom and husky, I’m going to look into those.

I’ll send you a PM husky.

The person whom I talked with regarding this program said that people who tutor within it get higher than $25/hr in wage, which I thought was superb-- as well as a mention of $50/hr! I am not sure if that’s accurate or not. However, the hours weren’t more than 10/week.

But wage isn’t the only important thing. Thanks again, and if anyone has any info more input I’d appreciate it.
