Does Anyone Watch "What Not to Wear"?

yesss,omgggg

You know, I forgot. I took my daughter to Macy’s for an appointment with a personal consultant for her 16th birthday. It wasn’t WNTW, but it worked out well. The consultant asked me my budget and her size. When we arrived, she had several outfits waiting for her.

We had a private dressing area and and the consultant for about 2 hours. A very nice experience. She even got a bra fitting out of it :)

Yes, VeryHappy, they do. My daughter said that while she was there, a woman of “parental age” was having a cut by Nick Arrojo himself. The woman was with her husband, who had obviously given it to her as a gift…my daughter thought a wedding anniversary.

And I confirmed with my daughter this evening…no sales pitch to buy anything.

I’m very happy with my haircut already, but I sure could use some help with my makeup. I think. (I mean, it’s not like I’m hideous, but I don’t get the whole eye shadow thing.)

Archmom – thanks!

Silvermoonlock – Every girl (and mom too!) should have a bra fitting every year or two. So much more comfort when you are wearing the right size!

I was told that reputable, classy salons do not make much money off beauty products. The products are there for the customer’s convenience (I tend to believe that; my Kerastase shampoo costs less at my hairstylist’s place than at Nordstrom Rack).

Yes, VeryHappy, the eye shadow thing escapes me, too. However, the powderous ones from Costco made my life much easier.

What every woman needs to do once in a few years is update her sleepwear! I bought a really nice summer nightshirt this weekend - blue, with intricate white flowery design, lace trim and cap sleeves, and H said, “Wow, that is a very nice dress. Will you wear it to the picnic this weekend?” His jaw dropped when I explained that “the dress” was not intended to be worn outside of the house! After that, I tossed every old, ratty freebie Fisher Scientific and the like T-shirt I used to sleep in, went back to Nordstrom Rack and bought several more “dresses” :)

A good way to select eye shadows is to visit the make-up counters at Nordstrom or similar stores. Call ahead and make an appointment if you want to be sure someone will be available to help you. They’ll apply eye makeup (or whatever it is you’re looking for) free of charge, and some will sketch/smudge and label the colors/placement on a little face diagram for you. If you like it – great. Buy their products, or look for similar colors elsewhere. If you don’t like it – try a different counter another day.

I do love that show…but don’t get to watch it much. My H goes flying out of the room when it’s on…lol. Times like these, I really wish I had a daughter. Sigh.

There’s always this for easy eyeshadow…

[Avon Eye Sheets, Avon Press on Eyeshadow, Instant Rub on Eye Makeup, Instant Eyeshadow Applicators](<a href=“Avon.com Page Not Found”>Avon.com Page Not Found)

I also like Almay’s shadows that you choose according to eye color. It may not be ‘fashion-forward’ but it’s a pretty safe bet that they won’t look like you’ve been punched in the eye.

I love it. Are they still on? What day / time?
My H and I watch different shows in the same room all the time, he is watching his TV with headphones, so it does not bother me.

When I go to dept stores for make up demos, I always feel like a clown when I leave. Apparently my coloring fits in the “purple eye shadow” chapter of every makeup guide ever written.

^^^ Ewwww . . .

I just wanna know what to do with the brown (causes skin to recede) and the highlighter (causes skin to pop forward). Take a look at Michelle Obama on the cover of Newsweek. Check out her (very subtle) eyeshadow. That’s what I want.

I LOVE reading this thread!! Yes, I confess, D watched WNTW, so by default, I do too. Can’t say I’m a big fan of Stacy, and there are times when I would PAY to tell her to shut up and take Clinton’s advice regarding her own clothing! Also, when you wear a size 9 shoe, the idea of buying a size or two larger to accomodate pointy toes is just plain silly- I’ll by the boxes and make origami shoes! I wish they would take the women shopping in their own home areas, because you can buy ANYTHING in NYC, but try finding the same up to date looks in Des Moines, Milwaukee or even here in Rochester, where everything is a season behind…and as far as maintaining a haircut at the local Hair Zoo…
As for the bra fitting, well, I agree, in theory. My D, getting the idea from WNTW, decided that I, her mother, who was obviously not wearing something that kept "the girls’ in the right place, would get a bra fitting while she was trying on something to go under her audition dress for this past winter. So, in we go to the department store where the woman who met us told us that she had been fitting bras for “over 30 years and was an expert”. An HOUR later, I was drenched in sweat and said professional fitter was exhausted, the fitting room draped with bras in every color and style imaginable. There was enough wire in that one dressing room to pick up Bejing Radio and transmit to the nearest satellite!! The fitter, in tears now, timidly knocked on the door and announced that she had nothing left to try. “In over 30 years, I have never had a woman I coudn’t fit, but you, you I can not help! Your shoulders are at an odd angle and your…well, I can’t find anything to fit all of you” and with that, she headed to clock out and leave for the night. My D was in hysterics, laughing so hard that she was crying and I was absolutely mortified. Feeling obligated, I hastily bought 3 of the offending devices- with wire, thank you- and slunk out of the store, giggling daughter in two. And I have not set foot in that store since then!

Yes, you can buy the fashions that you see (or a variation thereof) in Des Moines. Well, not technically in Des Moines, but online. Nordstroms, Neimans, Bloomingdales, Saks, Macy’s, Mango, and on and on all have web sites. And they have sales as well. I live in one of the most purchaser friendly places on earth and I still go online to find something that I can’t find in a store.

And speaking as the mother of tennis players who’s toes jam foward when running foward: Yes, it is advisable to purchase pointy toe (or tennis shoes) a half size larger to avoid what the kids call, “black toe”. Helps keep the feet healthy.

I have never found a fitter that helped me either. But I’m not giving up…yet.

If you are hard to fit don’t go to a dept. store or Victoria’s Secret…go to a bra store. Almost every town of size will have one and those ladies can fit anybody.

Mezzo’sMama: Condolences!! Don’t give up! There are experts out there.

Can a woman have custom made bras, like men can have custom made shirts?

OK…I know I’m in the minority but I have given up on wearing bras. I wear camisoles with a shelf bra…i have in lots of different colors and I love them. Then again, I’m not very big so support is not an issue. Soooo much more comfortable and I love the extra layer.
I’ll wear an exercise bra when I run…but otherwise I just don’t need that much. I got sick of the straps falling down, the tightness and all. And I don’t want to go through custom fit routines…not for what I have…lol.

I just watch for fun, I stopped clothe shopping long time ago and I have never used make up. The only thing I am buying is hair color for $3 at Dollar General, works just fine. I am soo lazy to even grocery shop, my H does it, except for our trips to Costco, my favorite place. Looking thru all that clothe, try them on…etc, makes me tired to just think about it.

I don’t know if you can have bras made to order, but I do know they can be altered. D is very well endowed and regular stores don’t carry her size (small band, large cups size). We visit a specialty shop in the nearest big (very big) city where they fit her and will occasionally have to do some alterations to get things just right. The bras are very pricey though.
