does being a fob help anyway??

i’ve browsed a lot of these chance threads here and felt totally screwed, all of you have ridiculously good stats and ea list, i don’t feel like i stand any chance compare to you guys…-_- so here’s the scenario:i came here two years ago from china as a sophomore, had a hard time getting used to the new school system and picking up english (even being in an esl class for the 1st semester), which kinda prevented me from getting excellent school performance, thats why so far i only had 1 honor and 1 ap. i know that’s way off the standards but there’s actually no way for a fob who had to catch up firstly to make such a ‘jump’…and so are my eas: i’ve played varsity basketball both in china and us for two years; participated in school magazine and painting project;got a small art scholarship from the art student league of new york;did 100hrs community service and basically thats it…i tried but there was too much more to take care of for a fob and that’s the best i can add to my ea list.

i have an average sat cr:610, math:800, wr:650, 1410/2060, sat2 math2:800, chem:760, gpa is alright, besides that, everything seems gonna get me killed. i’m applying to stern rd so i’m just wondering would being a newcomer be taken into consideration by the admission office?

any response will be greatly appreciated~

honestly, i think your SAT is on par for stern. there’s a big discrepancy between CR and M but i really don’t know if they look at an even distribution.

your SATIIs are awesome though.

you really are just as competitive as a lot of people posting on here.
good luck!

(btw i feel the same way… after looking at these threads I feel a rejection coming on =/)

thank you so much stephen =)

anybody else?

i don’t think just because you came from china 2 years ago, you will get some kind of a boost… so to say, especially since you are asian (just like me XD)

but that can be a different story if you are from like swaziland…(africa :P)

hey im chinese too!
and i came to the US in 5th grade.
the SATs cr and wr arent bad for a fob
im a freshman right now, and i guess i cant even make it that high yet.
it doesnt look all that bad,
im sure if you tell them that you’re a fob, they’ll give understand.
and also be sure, i think NYU needs a TOEFL score too if you had 3 or less years of english teaching.
還有一下, 可不可以問一下你是怎麽為SAT的CR和WR學習的呢?
我現在也很想學習早一下,
謝謝你:)

actually i didn’t expect my newcomer identity would enhance my general chance of getting accepted, but just to make my ea and course parts look less horrible…but anyway, thank you hkkxp!

hi kexin365~
since ur a freshman, my advice for u is just don’t stress out over the studying so early and enjoy ur high school as far as u can XD…
idk if i’m the right person to answer questions like “how to improve cr+wr”, i mean if u ask me math or something i’d have no problem with it… basically i just spent a summer in the tutor school, which is pretty helpful if u take it seriously, trust me u will get to that point sooner or later even if not voluntarily since we both have asian parents lol~~

thanks for your response, 祝你學業有成!!

haha, yeah
asian parents do it all the way
你是中國哪裏人?
