Does choice of major affect admission to Umich? Say I apply as an engineering major, is it harder to get an acceptance?
Michigan’s regular decision has a deadline of Feb 1. Would it increase my chances if I submit my application much before, say in December of January? Is this rolling admissions?
Major does not affect chances of admission, but college does. So Mechanical Engineering vs Chemical Engineering does not make a difference. But CoE vs LSA does. The CoE admits students with stronger quant credentials.
If you are requesting FA, it should not matter when you apply, although applying in January would not demonstrate the kind of interest in Michigan that the admissions office likes to see. I would submit the application no later than December 10.
Why didn’t you apply early action, since it’s not binding?
My SATs weren’t high enough. I have a much better score now.
Sooner the better. Once Michigan completes processing EA’s, and in past years they deferred some less likely attendees to RD, they begin the RD process. If you get your application in by Dec 10-15 your application will be ahead of those waiting until Feb 1.
Indeed, they deferred most applicants in EA and accept only 15–20% of them last year. RD starts with a pool of over 25,000 applicants immediately after EA announcement and it increases to over 50,000 towards Feb 1. Statistically, your chance in rolling RD admission would be much better if you submit the application as early as possible.
