I’m not sure whether there is enough a parking space for undergrad students. And how fat it is, from the parking lot to Social Sci Building?

As a first year, you can’t have a car. No parking permits for first years. -_____-

oh, i’m a third year. i’m gonna transfer from CC to Davis this coming fall.

It all depends. Are you going to live on campus? I think that if you live on campus you can only get a permit for the area where you live. . .so basically you have to walk/bike or stick to designated areas for on campus users. They reserve other/most parking for students who live off campus. If you live off campus parking may be limited. I don’t know T_T

I think this is the Davis method of fighting obesity? I will be living on campus FAR away from the building where I will be primarily attending so I haven’t even thought of parking. I am pretty much going to park in my apartment area and bike to all of my classes. There are so many places that don’t allow cars anyway that I think biking would be faster.

I drive to Davis on a daily basis (by necessity, not by choice). I bought a “C” parking pass for the entire year, which allows you to use the top levels of the parking structures. Since I get there early in the morning (before 8am), there is always plenty of parking. Literally hundreds of spaces available on campus. But if you try to park later in the day, say, at 1pm, you might have to circle around for 10-15 minutes.

I almost always use the parking structure near the Tennis Courts/Hickey Gym (also near the Soc. Sciences Building). So I’m not really sure about parking availability at other parts of campus.

I’m an incoming freshman and I’m planning on driving to Davis fro the Bay Area.
so i need to park my car in school for a whole week.
i heard that freshmen can’t get parking spots, is that true?
which department should i contact for information like this?

Freshmen are usually not allowed to bring car their first year. I wanted to but can’t…

From experience, if you get to campus early, you will have no trouble finding parking. Once noon hits, you definitely will have a harder time. There isn’t an automatic system that tells you when the garages are full either.

However, there are a good amount of parking lots elsewhere on campus. The parking garage in the west area (near the science building) is almost never full, as well as the ARC.

Freshmen who live in the dorms are not allowed to purchase a regular “C” UCD parking permit, but can appeal to get a K permit which allows them to park only in the Cuarto parking lots. There isn’t really much of a reason why one would need a car, and to those who have valid reasons, they will grant you an appeal. If you just want a car to drive around to Costco, Target, Walmart, etc. you might want to consider signing up for ZipCar. ZipCar came to Davis this year, and allows anyone with a valid drivers license (must have had for at least a year) to rent a car for an hourly/daily rate. It’s expensive because it includes free gas and insurance, but it’s great for those who need a car for only certain periods of time. (Plus, you don’t have to worry about people scraping your bumper and whatnot!) The system is completely automated and you can unlock the door to the car you’ve rented with a ZipCard or the iPhone app… pretty cool stuff. Haha

flwrgrl - From what I know, freshman will only have trouble getting parking permits if they are living in the dorms. Otherwise you can purchase a parking permit no problem. They are a bit pricey though, $468.00 for a yearly pass.

From the UCD website:
Permit type C is for “UCD Faculty, Staff, or Student not living in residence halls or other campus housing”.

I thought freshmen couldn’t have cars? On the tour that was made one guy freak out. Of course, there are special circumstances, I am sure (like if a freshman has a child or something but that would exclude the freshman from living in residence hall). As for transfers, we are allowed cars (junior transfers) but there are different types of parking permits and I think they are based on where you live. I am going to try to live in the on campus apartments and I (if i do live there) will have to purchase a special permit that allows me to ONLY park in my apartment’s parking lot (from what I understand). I suppose it would make sense. It wouldn’t be fair to take a lot of the parking from off campus students who already live farther from campus (HUGE place my sister almost passed out from walking around Davis in the heat while on the tour).

I have talked to people, and the only way you couldn’t get a parking permit as a freshman is if you are living in the dorms. I’m 100% positive, maybe the tour guide forgot to mention that or he assumed all freshman lived in dorms. I know so because I know freshmans who don’t live in the dorms that drives to campus.

Yes, UCD is pretty big, I got very tired from walking around too lol. I guess you can say I’m one of those skinny but very out of shape people. I’m hoping riding my bike to school everyday will fix that. :D
