Does deferring a year make you stupid?

Well, I havent deferred but I am an international student and there is almost a year’s between my graduation date and the commencement of the US fall semester, and Im afraid im getting dumber everyday ><

what do you mean “make you stupid”.
Do you mean you will remember less by the time you have started uni, or do you mean only “stupid people” defer a year.

Because I know many genius students who defer a year to do other things.

IMO deferring does make you stupid. You forget everything you learned in high school and stay home for a whole year. Lazyiness breeds stupidity.

Right, because anyone who takes a gap year does nothing but sit on their ass in front of the TV…
y17k - if you’re worried about it then maybe you could take classes (for fun) at a local college, or write to professors who teach subjects you’re interested in at the school you’re planning to attend and ask them for recommendations of books to read.
Get a job, get a different job, do community service, visit places that you’ve never been before, travel alone, travel with friends…take the opportunity to do something you’ve always wanted to do, or act on impulse and do something you heard about yesterday that sounds fun.
Even if you don’t “keep your hand in” with the academics, you should find that once you get to college you’ll be really motivated to learn and you’ll soon pick your studying skills back up again - after all, everyone’s had a long summer break, and it’s all new for other freshmen too.

Actually most of my friends and everybody else would sit in front of the TV and video games if they took the year off. And once you waited a year and go back to school again, you be less motivated. Not to mention you graduate a year later than your peers.

I would disagree with you on the lack of motivation - I couldn’t wait to get to college after working for a year. There are actually a number of studies that show that people who take a year off generally do better in college than people coming straight out of high school.
Of course, if you sit around the house all day, you might feel a little differently.
