I’m in my sophomore year right now, and I’m not involved in any clubs or sports. I spend most of my time just working on my art and animating. I’d say I’m devoted, but since it’s just something I do on my own, I wasn’t sure if it’d have much value to colleges, especially compared to being involved in the school or community…I know submitting supplementary portfolios are an option, but do they add much to an application?
If you are really good and/or are planning to apply to an art related major they could do a lot of good. However, I would encourage you to maybe start a drawing related club or see you you could relate your love of drawing to your community.
Enter some scholastic competitions!
Seconding the suggestion of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. They’re fun.
Another suggestion: start an art magazine at your school?
Why not find some existing clubs that interest you? You’re right that competitive colleges like kids who can get engaged, work alongside peers, try new things. Then your art is an added dimension, not the only one. Just winning an award doesn’t replace this activity and the good you can do, through service. That is, if you think you may want a holistic college.
