Does Duke give Placement exams?

I have read that there are certain majors at Duke that do not accept Biology AP Credits. I was curious if Duke gives placement exams instead for people who feel they know the material well enough.

I was wondering the same thing. anyone?

It’s not on a major-by-major basis to determine which APs to accept. All of Trinity students have the same AP policy. All of Pratt has the same AP policy. You can find links to these AP policies quite easily. It’s up to the biology department to determine how they want to handle AP Bio credit. This same policy established by the biology department applies if you’re a public policy major, a math major, sociology, or bio. Just the requirements for each major are different so you might have to take a different next class, but you get the same credit no matter your major.

Duke doesn’t give many placement exams, but there are some exceptions. Foreign language gives placement exams to make sure you’re in the proper course. Physics department used to give a placement exam if you scored high enough on the AP test and wanted to pass out (I’m not sure their policy now; AP on its own might be enough). I don’t know of any other departments that have placement exams. I know a couple people who somehow passed out of Math 103 (MV Calculus) when clearly there isn’t an AP exam but they took it at a local college in high school. Since this applies to such a small number of students, the departments take it on a case by case basis.

But generally, no, you can’t just take a placement exam because you think you know the material well enough in the vast majority of circumstances. High school knowledge of a subject and Duke knowledge of a subject are usually quite different. I know people who got 5’s on AP Econ and got a C in Intro to Econ at Duke. They thought it would be easy and didn’t choose to pass out, but regretted that decision later. If you get credit for a class at Duke through AP credit, do NOT retake it unless you really need a refresher.

Thanks bluedog, I was wondering that too.

The AP Econ anecdote made me curious about something else - are there certain AP credits that you would recommend using, like if the Duke course equivalent is particularly difficult? I’m a Trinity admit who honestly has no real ideas about majors at the moment and I will probably have around 8 AP credits to pick from. Any advice?

I think it would be a good idea to place out of the intro calc classes
