When judging applications, is there a holistic approach to this or is one component more important than the other? (i.e. Grades more important than ECs?)

It’s a holistic approach. Adcom wants to get a sense of you as an individual, and they want to see how you would fit into the community here, as well as how you can contribute to it. Every aspect of your application is important, though in different ways.

it is indeed holistic. somewhere on the website the dean of admissions has a video he made which has GREAT info on what duke is looking for in its applicants. i recommend looking for it. i found it very insightful. at the info session, they were explaining the six factors that the admissions committee RATE when viewing your application. they are:
courseload rigor
grades
standardized test scores
extracurricular activities
essays
recommendations
