Does every applicant compete w/ another? Or amongst their own pool?

For example are black/hispanic/asian/white students picked from each other? Or a quota? Let’s say for example a hispanic student. Will that hispanic student be chosen from 564 applicants from Hispanics or a whole 2,867 applicants from all ethnic backgrounds? This is in regards to AA. Im curious. Sorry for weird explanation if it wasn’t good lol if you guys need more clarification I will.

Have you read anything on the Hispanic Students forum?

I don’t think anyone who’s not a current or former admissions officer can tell you the answer to that question; you’ll be hard-pressed to get a definitive answer. Do know, though, that a quota system based on race was found unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in the late 1970’s. Past that, I doubt you’ll find anyone on CC that can tell you more.

Please read the following essay entitled “Admissions Messages vs. Admissions Realities” by the former admissions dean for Reed College:

[Reed College Admission Messages essay](http://www.reed.edu/apply/news_and_articles/admission_messages.html)

It nicely summarizes the “pool” or “category” method of choosing students.

Despite official claims, soft quotas of all sorts seem to be borne by numbers by all the selective schools.
